A cardboard Phone Holder
Mid Week- Self practice Videos
Sketching through Fusion 360
This week contains 3 main milestone activities:
Building a model of a simple mobile phone holder. I used cardboard, Cutter, scissors, Pencil and paper.
Then we go through a lecture to talk more detailed about the fabrication using laser machines and the software used to identify the ideas Fusion 360.
on the other hand, the Midweek and Eoweek Self-Practice helped me to understand well the software programs which have been used to guides below to understand how to to learn how to perform 2D sketching in Fusion 360. i have learned some skills as Sketching Tools , Sketching a Multipart Object , Extrusion and Assembly of a Multipart Object.
Also, to practise these tools I made a model of two objects: a Fidget Spinner, a Rocking Chair, a wearable, and a phone holder using Fusion 360.
Then, I discussed my chosen files with the instructor in the Eoweek session to show up the thoughts and difficulties that could be faced during the week. last but not least I will enter the Fab lab to cut it in the next week.

Laser cutting Model
Mobile Holder In Fusion 3D and laser Works
For the software:
All the models are sketched using Fusion 360.
Using Laserworks program to prepare the model for cutting through the laser cutter machine.
For the Machine:
All the model parts are cut using a laser cutter machine ( as all the models are 2.5D parts with constant dimension and consist of T slots connections).
For the Materials:
For the simple mobile phone holder. I used cardboard, Cutter, scissors, Pencil, and paper.
For the mobile holder model design assignment, I used plywood 3 mm.

To install the program:
Download the fusion 360 from Autodesk website the personal use.
open Fusion 360 and enter my account.
I settled the preferences of the program to be as mm in dim, default orientation in Z axis, the navigation as solid works.
i made a folder in the cloud of the program.
For a Fidget Spinner Model Drawing Steps:
i open a sheet and save it in a folder named by M.D.
From solid >>Sketch tool >> i choose the X Y plane to draw in it.
Then, i draw a 6 side polygon with the polygon tool, draw a circle 50 mm across the vertex of this polygon. then i made offset for another 2 circles 36, 26 mm inside.
then to make the center circle a bit bigger dim than the first one. I used the sketch dimension, move tabs, and adding a constrain of a tangent to fix the connection between those circles.
After that with the circular pattern, I made another 5 polar circles.
Last, i trimmed all the extra lines of the outer circles of the shapes with the trim icon.
For a Rocking Chair Model Drawing Steps:
i open a sheet and save it in a folder named by M.D.
For the base of the model: From solid >>Sketch tool >> i choose the X Y plane to draw in it.
I made a centerlines, I made it a fix lines as a constrain for the program to be defined lines for it, to draw only half of the shape as it is a symmetric object. I draw using line, rectangular shapes, fillet with R 5 mm, and sketch dimension tabs.
After finishing the half part, I used the mirror tab with using the center line as the mirror line.
For the back of the model:From solid >>Sketch tool >> i choose the Z Y plane to draw in it.
I made a centerlines, I made it a fix lines as a constrain for the program to be defined lines for it, to draw only half of the shape as it is a symmetric object. I draw using line, rectangular shapes, fillet with R 5 mm, and sketch dimension, Arc 3 point tabs.
After finishing the half part, I used the mirror tab with using the center line as the mirror line.
For the Sides of the model:From solid >>Sketch tool >> i choose the Z X plane to draw in it.
I made some different centerlines in the shape, I made it a fix lines as a constrain for the program to be defined lines for it, to draw only half of the shape as it is not symmetric object. I draw this shape after dividing it into 3 main parts, the body, the top stand and the leg. For the body and the top: By using line, rectangular shapes, fillets with R 5, 7 mm, and sketch dimension, Arc 3 point tabs.
For the leg part: I draw a 6 side polygon in order to be a reference for me to draw the leg arc part, i crossed the vertex of the arc through this polygon then made an inner offset of 5 mm.
For the mobile holder Model Drawing Steps:
i open a sheet and save it in a folder named by M.D.
For the first part the base of the model: From solid >>Sketch tool >> i choose the X Y plane to draw in it.
I made a centerlines, I made the origin as a fixed point, then drawing the big circle with Diameter of 70 mm, on the center line I draw the holes of screws and nuts. first beginning with a hole of D= 3.2 mm then draw a rectangular 3.2x10mm and with using a circular pattern I repeated it 3 times. Finally i draw 5 other circle holes 3.2 mm along the borders of the shape by using circular pattern.
For the second part the stand of the model:From solid >>Sketch tool >> i choose the Z y plane to draw in it.
the origin of program is the fixed point, i begin with the negative holes of screws and nuts in draw in the base with using rectangular shapes and lines. then by using Arcs icon i draw the body shape of the stand and the head by using a circle of 24 mm.
For the foundation base of the model: From solid >>Sketch tool >> i choose the X Y plane to draw in it. i made an offset from the circles and fillet the edges to be as a border of the holes i made.
then i extruded all the parts with 3mm and as a component parts. i made a copy of the stand as a version 2. i began to assemble all these parts together by choosing the center of the joints and center of the holes. then i downloaded screws as .Stl and joined them all in the holes. then i added a wooden material as the material finish of the cut model
I saved all the sketches as a DXF files to go through the laserworks software to be ready for the cut process.

Proposal B (Direction)
Send the file to the machine
Cutting Time
Fixation Time
First, i exported my design model sketches to DXF format. right click on each view from sketches browser tab.
Then I opened Laser works and import them all through the laser works software.
I navigated each view of the mobile holder through the software and with corresponding to the old model I cut in my First wooden sheet. i imported each view separately then I re- oriented their position.
I adjusted the setting of the program by selecting the cut main lines (Black color with power 65 and 25 speed), Scan (Red color with power 65 and 300 speed), Cut 2 (Blue color with power 20 and 300 speed). then i saved it as .RLD.
I entered the Fab Lab through the next week to continue the cut process of my design.
i put my flash memory into the computer that are connected to the laser cutting machine. i opened the laser works interface and open my .RLD file.i checked my design on the computer then download it to the machine. i renamed my file and opened the machine.
i opened the two switches of the machine and prepared the position of the laser nozzle to be focused and at my origin of the file nozzle to the top-left point of the cut area. then Checking machine focus by pressing the Pulse button. then i press file then work frame then time frame and it was around 1.40 minutes. then i pressed run to start the operation.

Base of the Phone Holder
Yes, I got feedback on the cardboard mobile holder from the instructor to think about how to make it with different positions as a portable part that standing the phone.
My friends comment on the product that it is very nice through the slack app.
Also, in the Eoweek we reviewed our mobile holder idea with our instructor. the number of the holes and screws was reduced in order to be more strength while cutting through the machine. Also, the position of the foundation base was moved to be more stable.
After cutting in the lab, actually i got a nice feedback from my friends in the fab lab, also they suggested me to polish the silhouette part model with the black color. and i did it, the results were amazing. Also, a friend gave me her phone to be able to capture the photos as i put my phone into along my model.
Also i helped one during the modeling process as she wanted a help in modeling the screw and nuts positions in her proposed model. i helped another one in modifying some errors in his model. as after he printed his model, he couldn't assemble all parts together. As there were an error in the dimensions. so we recalculated the parts again and modified one part that affected the others. Finally, he reprinted again this part and we could fix all together successfully.
Yes, through the midweek and Eoweek sessions; we discussed the video tutorials and address the problems i faced with my instructor.
Problems I Faced:
while installing the fusion 360, i was access with my university email, even I downloaded the personal version, it keeps me as an educational free trial 30 days version. i think this email was an educational as the system regonized. So the Solution was: I accessed with a gmail account, and all works well with me then.
With practising the midweek Videos:
i faced a problem with the colinear and coincident constrains, the fusion is extending the lines and the second line was not following the first line,, the reverse was happening with me. the solution: In the midweek session, I discussed it with my instructor. the solution was that the effect of the other constrains i made on the shape and lines. so I made them into another shape and it works well.
Fully Defined Lines
With practising the EOweek Videos:
I faced some problems in the defined lines and shapes. i discussed with the instructor the updating sketch and reflect on the extruded components. Also the defined points and how to make it defined with using the origin point. the solution was to move each line and consider the length that Is moved, then i will know which dim is not fixed yet.
Actually, i will use the Fusion 360 in drawing my project idea. it will help me in constructing the different parts of my project, thinking about the joints, T slots connections, the positions of them. Also, reviewing it all together, whether it works or issues have come. it will be so helpful in this point.
The Selected Design Idea
My model from Fusion 360
Output
The Fusion 360 software, i liked the assemble part and the joints. i actually use different 3D programs as 3Dmax, Revit and Rhinoceros. the sketch part is so easy in its concepts and friendly than my programs as i think. Also the most impressive thing that it doesn't need a high computer requirements, it is so lighter on the laptop than other 3D programs i use.
The idea of assembling and joints is impressive and a new thing for me.
Fusion 360 interface
The coolest thing that i transferred cardboard phone holder idea a low-fidelity into a medium-fidelity product. As In the Hands on activity: Building a model of a simple mobile phone holder. I used cardboard, Cutter, scissors, Pencil and paper. Making a pre low fidelity model with such basic tools is so interesting thing in brainstorming.
Practicing the Tutorials through making the wearable model parts as showed in the video.
i also watched some videos about how to download screws and put some materials to my models.
