This week assignment was about designing a 3D model of a pen and pencil holder using fusion 360, then print it using the 3D printer
As we are going to 3D print our designs, I thought about making a design that give the functionality with the least amount of materials, so I got the idea of making the holder in two pieces; which are a thin pen-like cylinder for supporting the disk that will have holes for holding the pens
-Fusion 360 for designing
- FDM 3D printer + blue PLA filament for printing
1- I started by designing the pen-like supporter, firstly I draw a cross-section of it, then I used the revolve feature to complete it
2- For the pin tip, I using I used the loft function to finish it
3- I split the pen-like supporter into two parts, so that I can control the thin cross-section that will carry the disc, and I used the press pull feature to give it some extra thickness
4- Regarding the disc part, I sketched it completely, then I used the extrude function to give it the proper thickness
5- For changing the color of each body, I used the appearance property and gave the pen-like supporter metallic red color and the disc a grey color
1- I exported the designs bodies in stl format (file -> export -> choose stl format), then I used Cura to prepare the gcode file with the proper setting for the 3D printer
2- Unfortunately, I wasn't able to attend the lab through the whole week due to illness, but the instructors was kind enough and they printed the holder for me
Settings for the 3D printer
I didn't ask for a feedback for this week project, but in the end of week session while we was making a group activity for drawing Lego parts, I was working with a peer (Rami) who has an architecture background and he had helped me a lot in how to iterate dimensions diagrams in a more organized way
I got stuck while drawing the Lego torso part from the inside because I didn't know how it looks in reality, so, I searched for its 3D real shape to imagine it more clearly
Designing 3D object is for no doubt a cornerstone skill that I will make use of in the final project, especially in designing small complex pieces in the project
For me, the coolest thing about this week is dealing with principles I'm not super comfort with, like designing and converting 2D sketches to 3D, I was always bad with designing and imagining stuff, but this week I was obligated to do so, and it was cool to get out of my comfort zone :D
