March 2025
The Salt Creek District 48 Community has truly demonstrated its unwavering commitment to our students, and we are deeply grateful for the overwhelming support of the Safe Schools | Secure Futures referendum. This successful outcome allows us to begin these essential projects that will significantly enhance our learning environments. We are thrilled to be able to implement critical safety and security upgrades, modernize some of our classrooms, and ensure our facilities remain vibrant centers of education for years to come. Thank you for your partnership in investing in the future of our children.
May- June 3 Construction will continue on the exteriors of each of our buildings.
June 4 - Demolition and Phase II of construction inside the schools will begin.
August 15th - Construction completion (except for the new Albright Gym).
August 27th - (Wednesday) First day of school for K-8
August 28th - (Thursday) First day of school for Preschool
We always try to be good neighbors during construction. We are sending this letter to the neighbors who live close to our schools to let them know that construction is beginning.
Salt Creek School District 48 is placing a $48 M bond measure on the November 5, 2024, ballot. If approved by taxpayers, the funds will be used to improve safety and security, ADA accessibility, traffic flow, physical education, and academic programming. If the referendum is successful, the district will be equipped to meet the needs of students today and in the future as enrollment continues to increase.
The District is a prudent steward of taxpayer dollars. This is reflected in our financial score from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE); D48 is consistently awarded the highest recognition possible. We do not currently have any debt and have completed many safety and educational improvements using existing funds.
The scope of work required to secure our schools and complete other improvements, including ADA accessibility, is beyond the scope of what is budgeted annually for maintenance and repairs. School districts across Illinois regularly issue bonds for similar projects, much the way a business or homeowner might take out a loan to pay for capital improvements.
District 48 benefits from a long-standing partnership with the community. Residents, parents, staff, the Board of Education, and the Administrative Team all have one goal—Teaching Tomorrow’s Leaders and ensuring the continued growth and success of every student. Maintaining and improving our three schools will allow us to continue to serve current students and attract new families to our community and D48.
The referendum plan, approved by the Board of Education on August 8, reflects the input of community stakeholders who collaborated with the District’s staff, architects, and financial advisors to identify high-priority needs and fiscally responsible solutions.

Improving safety and security by adding secure vestibules at every building so that visitors can be properly screened before entering. All of our neighboring districts have secure vestibules. Administrative offices will be relocated so they are adjacent to the entrances. This will limit the number of visitors who need to enter the schools for meetings while classes are in session.
Increasing ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) accessibility for students, staff, and visitors by updating toilet facilities, adding an elevator at Albright, and ensuring that entrances are secure and accessible at all buildings.
Reconfiguring existing spaces to improve supervision by providing clear sight lines and eliminating areas that could become hiding places. This will ensure that staff can easily observe students and create more usable space by allowing schools to once again use areas that are currently closed due to inadequate supervision.
Enhancing educational programming by creating grade-level centers that are aligned with student development and state standards for primary, intermediate, and middle school. This will benefit students by extending the time between building transitions and allow the District to utilize resources more efficiently.
