According to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, suicide is the second-leading cause of death among school-age youth. Research has indicated that asking about suicide does not increase the risk of suicide.
Talking about suicide may decrease anxiety and provide an opportunity for the individual to discuss something that may be difficult to talk about. Suicide is preventable and anyone can help prevent a death by suicide.
Working together, we can decrease the suicide rate in our schools and community. It is important to instill a sense of hope and encourage help-seeking behavior. Hope and support can save a life!
Information on this website does not replace the advice of a mental health professional. Salem-Keizer Public Schools will share supportive resources as part of our outreach and suicide prevention efforts. If you notice that your student is unusually withdrawn, tearful, or depressed, seek professional help or call the crisis information contacts below. If there are immediate safety concerns call 9-1-1.
988 has been designated as the new three-digit dialing code that will route callers to the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline. While some areas may be currently able to connect to the Lifeline by dialing 988, this dialing code will be available to everyone across the United States starting on July 16, 2022.
Love is Respect.
A project of the National Domestic Violence Hotline, love is respect was launched in February 2007 as loveisrespect, National Dating Abuse Helpline with a supporting grant from Liz Claiborne, Inc. At the time we were the first 24-hour resource for teens experiencing dating violence and relationship abuse; we remain the only teen helpline serving all of the United States and its territories.

Our agency offers a safe refuge and support to victims and survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, stalking and human trafficking. Our programs and services inform survivors of their options and support them in their choices. A cornerstone of our philosophy is respect for the rights of all survivors, including the freedom to decide whether to report to the police the crimes committed against them. We work with survivors of any race, color, creed, religious belief, sexual orientation, or gender identity.
