I had the chance to visit many places and experience many things in my art class. Art is my favorite subject and always has been. I have achieved mastery of the class learning objectives and expanded my art skills and techniques. I am a very open-minded person and painting, drawing, and coloring are all very relaxing to me. One thing that we had experienced that I had never done before was pottery. The pottery unit was fun but a little challenging since it is a 1st-time experience. Salisbury Academy has made me fall in love with art more than ever before.
In the fall I had the opportunity to learn about costume design from Bradley Moore, Executive Director of the Piedmont Players. From Bradley, I learned that there is a personal connection to designing costumes. But also, it is a collaborative process between the designer and the director who shapes the overall vision. With Bradley I created an outfit for my own character in a children's play. I shared my design and the meaning behind it.
In the spring, Salisbury Academy Lower School produced a play based on Winnie the Pooh with student actors. Because I enjoyed sewing and designing, I was assigned the task of creating costumes for Tigger, Piglet, Kanga, and Roo. I had to follow the instructions given by the director, Jenny Hubbard. She was very specific in the style she wanted, so I had to research traditional Winnie the Pooh characters for inspiration.
I had cut out fabric from some old tee shirts into the shape of what I needed. Then I sewed the bottom leaving just a little space open. The little space open was where I inserted the wires and stuffing. The stuffing was to make it look real, while the wire was there for support. This was an amazing experience because I got to do something I enjoyed but for school.
In this art module we had the chance to explore storytelling. We had the opportunity to become teachers for 6-7 first grade students. In my group, we taught the children about percussion instruments and created a score to accompany the reading a fairytale. My partners and I made a lesson plan to keep the flow going and keep the students engaged. These children learned how to play their instruments when they heard assigned cues. I enjoyed this day very much. This gave me an experience to see if I am capable of being a teacher in the future. It was a very good way to learn and try new skills I ordinarily wouldn't experience.
When creating the costumes I had to use the skills of a motivated student. Creating the costumes had become very time-consuming. I had found myself working extra late on the tiger ears because each stripe was hand-painted. I had to stay motivated to keep going to complete my project.
In the storytelling work, I demonstrated a confident communicator, because I felt like my piece was very true to my personality. I was able to go confidently up in front of Bradley and his design team and present my piece. I don't usually enjoy presenting, but I felt like I was able to get up speak confidently to people who are interested in similar things as me.
