I took a class entitled Community Immersion. Through that class, I had the opportunity to meet with and learn from professionals from across the community in the for-profit, non-profit, and government sectors. This page includes my learning and reflections on some of the presenters I found most significant.
Elia Gegorek, founder of el Centro de la Comunidad, came to our school and presented to our community class. Her organization seeks to spread the positive word on how important mothers are.
This taught me how much mothers do that often goes unnoticed.
Her presentation this was very significant to me because it made me consider my level of gratitude for the family structure.
I had the chance to meet Kristen Trexler and Gary Blabon at Novant Health Regional Medical Center. Kristen presented to our class about what Novant does and what happens behind the scenes in the organization.
We then traveled to our local Novant hospital where Gary Blabon gave us a tour. Throughout the tour, they took us out to their emergency helicopter pad. We were allowed to climb in the chopper and get the feeling of what it's like to be an EMS.
We visited Novant because we were curious about how their systems thinking works. My classmates and I were highly interested in learning more about their business and what it's like to choose that career path.
I learned that Novant Health strives to help people and deliver remarkable healthcare.
We saw how they impact the community through preventative support like the teaching kitchen as well emergency care like the helicopter.
We had the chance to meet Karen Alexander who is the Mayor of Salisbury, NC. We had walked to City Hall, where the Mayor gave us a tour of the building and her office. She had spoken to us about what goes on in the building and what she does for a living.
I specifically remembered learning that Mayor Alexander was also an architect. She explained how this profession helped her in community building processes in her leadership role.
This is significant to me, because its art is relatable. Architects have to have a clean creative mind to be able to complete their work. it involves a lot of arranging and sketching. I found this very fascinating because I am interested in artistic things and even enjoy learning about them.
Salisbury has a governed city council that is chaired by the mayor. Mayor Alexander strives to make our community a better place for families and individuals. The mayor often arranges and plans the city council meetings. She also attends many community events and ceremonies. Overall, the Mayor is the Chief Executive of our City.
