Through my Art Immersion class, I developed multiple forms of creative expression as I learned alongside an array of professionals in the community. This page shows how I developed new, artistic ideas as well as interpreted, presented, and shared artistic work. This page also illustrates my understanding of how the arts convey meaning and my ability to connect artistic work with personal meaning and external context.
I had the opportunity to learn from Anthony Johnson (Apple), Wayne Hinshaw (retired Salisbury Post photographer), and John Stamp (owner and photographer of Studio 35). Anthony Johnson came and talked to us about techniques for capturing great photos using only our phones. Wayne Hinshaw spoke with us about his story of becoming a photographer and some of his strategies for taking photos. Finally, we ventured across the road to Studio 35 where John Stamp gave us a tour of his studio and walked us through his process for taking and editing photos. All of these experiences gave me a good grasp on the art of photography that I will carry onward with all the pictures I take in the future.
I learned about lighting a professional photo editing techniques from John Stamp at his studio. I had a conversation with him afterwards about the software he used from which I learned a great deal.
I also learned about photography as a career from Wayne Hinshaw. It was very interesting hearing his story of becoming a photographer and taking pictures as a career.
Anthony Johnson also taught us about techniques to take great photos with our phones. I learned about different photo editing techniques and the "Rule of Thirds" which I believe have really improved my overall ability to take great photos.
At the end of this unit, I was challenged with crafting a story that could be told in only three pictures. After much brainstorming, I settled on an idea. Utilizing the skills I had learned, I took photos using photography techniques and created a story in the pictures that you see above.
Throughout this unit, I learned from Nichole Pequeno, a printmaking and mixed media artist at Railwalk Studio off Lee Street. I learned about various printmaking techniques including Screenprint and Engraving which I had the opportunity to do and create art through printmaking.
Nichole Pequeno taught us how prints require constant and even pressure to cleanly transfer to the paper. A roller press is a great tool for printmaking because it allows for this constant pressure.
I learned how utilize special tools to carve into linoleum in order to make an image that will appear on paper to be the mirror of what I create through carving.
During the time I spent learning from Nichole Pequeno, I was creating prints according to Nichole's instruction. At the conclusion of that time, I had created two prints utilizing different printmaking techniques which are pictured above.
This unit of Creative Expressions focused on the art of Storytelling, during which I had the wonderful opportunity to learn from Brad Stephenson, PhD., an educator and theatre artist, as well as Keith Anderson and Mrz Good Newz from Livingstone College. I learned about how to tell a good story, keep an audience engaged, and the power of post-production editing.
I learned how to tell a good story, even one about something as simple as a pencil as Brad demonstrated during class. I learned how to tell a story using both words and body language. Both of these methods I practiced in group activities.
My class and I had the opportunity to view a podcast studio and an actual radio studio. Both of these were located ad Livingstone College and gave me great insight into the technological side of storytelling
After having the wonderful opportunities to learn from individuals in the community about storytelling, I was tasked with creating a podcast that simply told a story. The podcast I created (Whispers of the Unknown) was shown at Exhibition in the Spring.
I took it upon myself to speak with John Stamp after his presentation. During this, I expressed my interest in marketing and we spoke about some of the software he uses that also has applications in marketing that I may want to check out. (Confident Communicator)
I was also able to utilize techniques I learned in my photography for the class and in everyday life. I'm well equipped to capture photos of the moments from my life for the years ahead. (Motivated Student)
During the Printmaking unit, I gained insights into the local artists of Salisbury and learned about the wonderful things they create. Some are just across the street at Railwalk. I gained a great appreciation for local art, art that I will do my best to support as art itself becomes a greater aspect of Salisbury. (Compassionate Citizen)
When there wasn't a microphone available to record my podcast, I had to use the microphone in my laptop, that's not professional grade, to record all while managing the background noises from a still active, and loud, school. (Resilient Individual)
Throughout the creation of my podcast, I had problems getting the quality of audio I wanted during the editing stage. However, I sought out advice from peers and teachers. At their suggestion, I used software to ensure the audio was consistent in volume and that any background noise was removed. With just a little hard work, I was able to produce a great work product.
