Purpose

The Salem Library exists to encourage lifelong learning and literacy! The library supports the school's curricula and members of the Faculty in providing academic excellence through a well-maintained collection of fiction and non-fiction works that promote the spiritual, intellectual, social, and emotional development of each student into informed and involved Christian citizens. The library is an extension of the Accelerated Reading (AR) Program as well as a resource for research and novels.

Policies

2021-2022 LIBRARY POLICIES

  • 2nd grade - 8th grade patrons may check out regular circulation books for 2 weeks.

    • **Kinder/1st Grade students will be allowed to check out new books every week if they have returned previously checked out books.

  • Research circulation books may be checked out for 4 weeks.

  • 2nd-8th grade students may have up to 3 books checked out at a time.

    • Kinder/1st grade students may have 1 book checked out at a time.

  • At this time, all check-outs must be done through Mrs. Molitor; individual library cards will not be used. **

  • Books not checked out by a specific student/Faculty member are to remain in the library at all times.

  • Students are responsible for any materials checked out using their library account. Library fees will be billed through FACTS at the end of each quarter for lost or damaged books.

  • Students or parents may come and search the library shelves during their classroom library time or other times designated as open library time.

  • No students may be in the library unsupervised before, during, or after school hours.

  • No eating or drinking is permitted in the library.


**This policy is subject to change at the discretion of the Librarian and Administration as the year progresses.

Procedures

Students, parents and faculty may search the Salem library database using Destiny Discover. Students can access Destiny Discover using the shortcut called "Salem Library" on their Salem issued iPad. At this time, Spartan Academy students will have their checked-out books delivered by the end of the day to their homeroom. Remote learning students students will be notified when their books are available for P/U by e-mail by the end of the day on the day the hold is placed. Books may be picked-up Monday-Friday during school hours from the library cart inside the pedestrian gate. Here are step-by-step instructions to help you find your next favorite book:

LOG IN

  • Open Destiny Discover

  • Click the blue " Log in with Google" box on the left side of the screen.

  • Use your Salem Google username and password to log in.

SEARCH

  • Use the search box and the (+) to the right to find books that meet your reading level, interests, etc.

  • Click on a title or image to learn more about the story.

CHECK-OUT

  • Click on the title or image of the book you'd like to check out.

  • Click on the HOLD button to request a book.

      • You cannot undo a hold. If you would like to cancel a hold, email Mrs. Flattley.

RETURN

  • Books may be returned via the book drop next to the library door or the drive-up book drop outside of the pedestrian gate.

  • Do NOT bring books into the library.

OVERDUE/LOST BOOKS

  • Fines for overdue and lost books will be assessed at the end of each quarter. If your students has overdue or lost books, they will be notified one week prior to the end of the quarter. Fines will be issues and paid via FACTS after the final day of the quarter.
