Eighth grade literature is centered around universal themes, with an emphasis on characterization, setting, mood, theme, irony, literary devices, and information materials
Texts: Prentice Hall and Holt Literature
Genres will cover short stories, nonfiction excerpts, poetry, information materials
Novels: And Then There Were None by Agatha Christie & Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand
Assignments & tests will include story/chapter notes, critical thinking activities, formal/informal responses to literature, projects, tests (short answer and essay) on selected texts, Socratic seminars
Vocabulary from texts will be tested on when we finish a story or unit

Grammar will focus on writing! (clauses, sentence
structure, and punctuation)
Daily Assignments include Grammar Flip (an online program), journaling; root word assignments and tests are given weekly
Formal writing assignments will include persuasive essays, responses to literature, narratives, descriptive/creative writing, a poem, a formal letter, and writing about nonfiction articles
The research project in the first and second quarter will be based on an event in American history

Understanding that God has a specific plan for each of us
