How many minutes of homework is typical?

Typically, 5th graders will do about 50 minutes of homework a night.  This includes reading.  Students will practice math skills with a nightly math assignment.  In addition, students will be expected to finish assignments which were not completed in class.  

How often are grades updated?

Grades will be updated each week.  Graded papers will be passed out within a few days of their due date.  

How is late work handled?

According to the policy at Salem, work that is turned in late will receive no higher than a 75%.  This does not include work that is late due to an absence.  

What is the criteria for Honor Roll and Principal's List?

3.75 - 3.99 - Honor Roll

4.0 - Principal's List

Can my child bring a treat for the class on their birthday?

Students are welcome to bring a special birthday treat on the day of their birthday (or around the date).  Donuts, cupcakes or popsicles are great ideas!

Will the students switch classrooms?

5th graders will learn English, Reading and Social Studies with Mrs. Rumsey in her classroom and Math and Science with Mrs. Kelso in her classroom.  Students will start in their homeroom and have Bible with their homeroom teacher.  


PE

PE is Mondays and Wednesday   

The PE teacher is Mr. Steve Mattoon.


Spelling 

Students will not take weekly spelling tests in 5th grade.  This allows for a high concentration and emphasis with learning Latin and Greek roots.  Students will keep a spelling journal and complete root word activities.
