Let's write a poem

Activitat de grup 7

How to write a 'Rose and red' poem

1. Write all the short colour words that you know

Rhymes are words that end with the same sound. (Hat, cat and bat rhyme)

Rhyming sounds don't have to be spelled the same way (cloud & allowed rhyme)

2. Write all the rhymes that you know

In English, there are words that sound the same as another word, but they have different meaning.

They are quite tricky for non-native speakers.... ;·)

3. Have a look at these examples and classify them by their pronuntiation....

A group of lines in a poem is called stanza.

Stanzas of four lines are called quatrains

4. Complete the quatrains:

Roses are red,

Violets are __________ ;

The rest of this poem

Is what I forgot.

Roses are red,

Grass is __________ ;

Don’t sit too close,

Your feet really stink.

5. Write your own:

Roses are red,

Daisies are ________;

Read carefully the quatrains below.

You will recognize different types of rhymes. At the end of each sentence, write an A or B according to the termination:

FIRST SNOW

Snow makes whiteness where it falls

The bushes look like popcorn balls

And places where I always play

Look like somewhere else today

By Marie Louise Allen

I wish I had no teachers

That's what I'd like to see.

I'd whatever I wanted to

And nobody'd yell at me

This last poem has two quatrains:

PUMPKINS ON GUARD

Look at all the pumpkin faces

Lighting up so many places.

On the porch and in the yard,

Pumpkin faces standing guard.

Looking friendly, looking mean,

With a smile or with a scream.

Orange faces burning bright

In the cool October night.

(by Charles Ghinga, from "Halloween Night")

Now........ It's your time!

Write your own quatrain about... YOU! You can use the type of rhyme that you like most.

HINT: First of all, make a list of words that can describe you, things that you do, places where you usually go, hobbies...
