In Science Lab, we experimented with air. We tried different ways to get a cotton ball to move without touching it.
We made dioramas of the nativity scene to celebrate the Epiphany.
For our Christmas celebration, we sang Happy Birthday to Baby Jesus, ate cupcakes, and played pin Baby Jesus in the manger. We made reindeer food and did some fun Christmas crafts.
We love using the giant number line to help us learn how to use the number line to add and subtract.
We put our shoes in the hall for St. Nicholas Day. When we came back out, we all had candy canes in our shoes! We watched a video to help us learn all about St. Nick and even colored a picture.
Thursdays are center days in the First Grade! The kids look forward to it all week long! Here are some of our new activities that were purchased with the help of our donation and from parents.
We were recently given a very generous donation. One of the things we were able to purchase was enough rek and reks for the entire class! The kids really love having these tools to help them visualize their math problems!

Halloween fun!
We had so much fun on pumpkin day! We opened up a pumpkin and learned all the parts of the pumpkin, measured and weighed pumpkins, and learned about their life cycles. We got to taste plain pumpkin and then took that and practiced our measuring by baking a delicious pumpkin treat!
We used a giant number line to practice hopping back to subtract.
We visited our friends in Pre-K to be messengers of God, just like the Angel was to Mary. Some of us found a brother, sister, or friend while we were there!
The students loved using the number line as a tool to help us add. We practiced starting on the biggest number and hopping out the smaller number.
In the science lab, Mrs. Tucker brought in an owl and a turkey to help us identify characteristics of birds.
We made observations about fish characteristics by examining dead fish.
We played Simon Says to help learn about commanding sentences.
Thursdays are our favorite day in first grade! We love having center time! It's our fun learning time each week. After we learn different center activities, they are available as when I'm done with my work options.
We acted out the story, "5 Little Monkeys" to introduce the idea of subtraction and taking away.
We compared gummy worms to live worms to help us figure out the differences between living and non-living things. Then we measured each "worm" with cubes as a way to practice using non-standards units of measurement.
