COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
Assignment 1: Literary Analysis Paper (200 points)
For your first long paper, you will utilize a series of detailed close readings to support and develop an argument about A Room of One’s Own, “The Yellow Wallpaper,” or Brown Girl Dreaming.
Assignment 2: Personal Memoir (250 points)
For this assignment, you will compose a brief personal memoir and reflection statement. The memoir itself will follow one of two paths in which you emulate the autobiographical style of Educated, Brown Girl Dreaming, or Persepolis in the telling of your own tale.
Assignment 3: Film Researcher Paper (250 points)
For this creative research-based assignment, you will design a research packet for a production crew as they work to adapt one of our course readings into a film or television pilot.
Blog (100 points)
This assignment affords you the opportunity to reflect on your readings throughout the semester. Most blog posts will follow particular prompts posted on the course website, but a few are open-ended. At the end of the term, you will briefly reflect on your semester-long contributions online, using this Google Form.
Discussion (200 points)
Discussion is at the heart of what we do in the Humanistic Studies Program. Academic conversation relies on a combination of advanced social and intellectual skills. Your grade will be comprised of your work in both the synchronous (i.e. "live" discussion in class or on Zoom) and asynchronous (i.e. discussion posts on Flipgrid) environments.
More details on goals and grading of in-class discussion are available here. Online discussion shares similar aims (quality, consistency, clarity) but follows the guidelines posted here. Extra credit opportunities will be available throughout the semester. To earn one point toward the final participation grade, students attend select campus events (virtual or face-to-face) and post responses (one paragraph in length) within 24 hours of attendance.
GRADING:
Final grades will be determined by adding the total points for all completed assignments. Individual rubrics with specific criteria and point values will be distributed for each assignment/project. Details regarding assessment of longer papers are available on the grading rubric.
