You are your own greatest resource.
As a program, HUST promises to offer you great things--a tight-knit intellectual community, rigorous interdisciplinary training, web design skills, highly refined and adaptive analytic abilities, countless (limitless!) opportunities to refine your voice (both written and oral), field trips and cultural experiences, opportunities to read some of the world's “great books” from Homer to the present, connections to an impressive network of alumnae, and impactful conversations into the meaning of life (yes, quite seriously). The only person that can ensure that these things happen, however, is you. You need to bring your 'A' game to this program: the more you bring to the table, the more you will get out of it.
Great expectations or, how to succeed in HUST.
Don’t just do the reading. Dig into the reading, swim in it, wrestle with it. And, while you’re at it, figure out a system for keeping track of it all.
Bring ideas to the table. Every.single.time.
Take notes during discussion. Experiment and refine your note taking practices (digital, handwritten, visual).
Write something at least twice a week in relation to each class (journals, drafts, notes).
Revise, revise, revise…and eventually call it a day.
Get up when you fall down (you will fall down, but you *can* get back up!).
Lean on your peers, but always rely on yourself.
Consult your faculty. When in doubt, ask a prof (we’re here to help you succeed!).
Take advantage. Cultural opportunities and field trips abound. Go.
Be bold & push yourself. Don’t passively rely on your “natural abilities”. You can do more; don’t you want to see how much more?
