Our focus in this course will be early modern cultural exchange from the years 1500 to 1800. While our reading list is predominantly comprised of European literary works, we will look to these narratives, plays, and poems to surface the (sometimes overlooked) networks of influence and exchange as they transpired across the Mediterranean, within Europe, and in the Americas. Beginning with some of the earliest published accounts of the New World in the 16th century and ending with the late eighteenth-century autobiography of an African ex-slave living in England, we will survey the literature of Western culture from the Reformation through the Enlightenment.
Daily agenda items, relevant links, and other resources will be available on the collaborative class log.
As part of this course, you will design and publish a basic website using Google Sites. This eportfolio will contain pages dedicated to showcasing your work in this class (as well as any others). The eportfolio will also provide you with basic web design skills, an opportunity to explore a different authorial "voice", and an additional means of connecting with your classmates. Privacy settings can be adjusted along a spectrum, from public, to SMC only, to Coll. III classmates.
Blackboard will serve as our hub for all things related to grading: assignment submission and grade distribution. I may also record attendance on this site. Any mini-lectures or PDFs of course readings will also be available on the BB page for this course.
Many links on the BB menu will take you back to this site, which is our true course hub.
At times, your participation in this class may take place online and asynchronously (i.e. not "live"). Rather than writing your thoughts about course readings in a discussion board, you will have an opportunity to post short video clips of 1- to 3-minutes in length.
LibreTexts is an easy-to-use online platform that features open educational resources (i.e. free books and textbooks!).
Some of your course readings and in-class activities will be based on this site.
