In this course, taught in tandem with Cultural History I: Ancient and Medieval Culture (HUST 321), we will immerse ourselves in the worlds of Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, medieval Europe, and beyond. Our focus will be on literary texts from the 9th century BCE to the 13th century CE, but we will do so in conversation with developments in art, music, and religion. You will have the opportunity to read works by some of the earliest women writers, to discuss the impact and cultural exchange between early Christianity and Islam, and to analyze why the way we tell stories (epic poem or letter? orally, by scribal proxy, or self-authored/written?) is as significant as the stories themselves.
Daily agenda items, relevant links, and other resources will be available on the collaborative class log.
As part of this course, you will design and publish a basic website using Google Sites. This eportfolio will contain pages dedicated to showcasing your work in this class (as well as any others). The eportfolio will also provide you with basic web design skills, an opportunity to explore a different authorial "voice", and an additional means of connecting with your classmates. Privacy settings can be adjusted along a spectrum, from public, to SMC only, to Coll. I classmates.
Blackboard will serve as our hub for all things related to grading: assignment submission and grade distribution. I may also record attendance on this site. Any mini-lectures or PDFs of course readings will also be available on the BB page for this course.
Many links on the BB menu will take you back to this site, which is our true course hub.
At times, your participation in this class may take place online and asynchronously (i.e. not "live"). Rather than writing your thoughts about course readings in a discussion board, you will have an opportunity to post short video clips of 1- to 3-minutes in length.
