Wildlife
The chamois goats are native to the mountains in the south west of France. They are experienced in climbing mountains and cliff faces. In the summertime, the chamois goats climb high up into the mountains and often reach the summits, but during the winter, they can usually be spotted at the bottom of the hills. The goats have a face with white and black stripes and two short curled horns.
During the 1990s, wolves traveled from Italy to find a home in France and they eventually settled in the French Alps. There are over 200 wolves living in France nowadays. Many of them make their journey from the snowy mountains to the warmer southern coast. Despite the increase in numbers of these wolves, they are endangered.
European wild cats are found right across the north east of France, and even in parts of the south west. They usually live in dense forest areas to try and avoid human interaction. Wild cats have a thick, long, tan and striped coat, and can weigh up to three to five kilograms. They hunt down small mammals and birds using their strong limbs for themselves and their kittens.
