Reminder: If you forget your instrument or are absent, you will need to make a short video of yourself performing the music covered during the missed class and submit it through email to Mrs. Faw, pfaw@sainthilaryschool.org .

You have one week to make up the missing work before the 0 stands.
Keep working on Pachelbel's Canon. Long bow strokes, no rests in between the notes. Listen to yourself. Are you playing in tune? Are your fingers in the correct place?
Review the songs for the upcoming Living Stations on April 2nd and the concert on May 8th.
Be prepared to be assessed on each 4 measure section during the next two weeks.
Practice up through measure 20. Do not go on yet. Although I am very proud when I hear so many of you attempting the next section. You are not playing the correct notes/fingering. Remember that practice makes PERMANENT. Please wait until we go over the next section together.

Continue you to practice up through measure 16. We will learn measures 17- 20 next week.
Keep practicing the first 4 lines of Pachelbel Canon.
We have learned the first 4 lines of Pachelbel's Canon. Are you making the tranistion from half notes to quarters accurately? Remember a half note is 2 beats and a quarter note is 1 beat. Keep practicing with smooth bow strokes and a beautiful tone.
Practice the first 3 lines of Pachelbel's Canon. Use long, smooth bow strokes.
Keep working on the Name That Note drill. Challenge yourself with the Intermediate level.

Be prepared with your violin on Thursday ready to play. Have you made all of the suggested corrections?
You will be taking your treble clef note reading assessment this month. Make sure that you are reviewing your letter names. Use this drill Name That Note.
The make up assessment for students who missed the concert will be on Thursday, January 8th morning recess or lunch recess or Friday January 9th during morning recess.
We will begin Pachelbel's Canon this week. If you are absent on Thursday, please make a video of yourself playing the first line of Pachelbel's Canon. You know the notes. Use the chart on the learning site if you need help. Send the video to me in an email by 3:00 PM on Thursday. You should also send a screen shot of your score on Name That Note.

I am so proud of the FIFTH Graders and their performance at the Christmas Concert. They added so much to the evening. The make up assessment for students who missed the concert will be in January in the music room. Students may choose from the following dates and times: Thursday, January 8th or Friday January 9th during either morning recess or lunch recess.
This week we will enjoy some Christmas music activities in our music class as well as finishing our work with Jingle Bells on the violin.

5th Grade Music Information
Students are expected to be able to read the letter names of the notes on the treble clef staff and to identify and perform correctly rhythms using whole, dotted half, half, quarter and eighth notes/rests.
Students supply their own violin. I STRONGLY recommend renting from a reputable music store. If you prefer to purchase please read this. If you are using a hand me down, you need to take it to a luthier for adjustments prior to our first music class for adjustments.
You will need the following items for class on Thursdays and Fridays.·
Violin/bow (with 4 fine tuners)
Rosin
Cleaning cloth
Folding music stand in a case
Folder for music and other papers (keep 2-3 pieces of lined paper and a pencil in your folder) (Folder will be supplied by St. Hilary School)
Cases should be labeled with student's Name, School and Phone Number (either home or school.)

Memorize the letter names of your strings.
Low to high G, D, A, E and High to low E, A, D, G.
Practice playing pizzicato.

Practice the spider crawl on your bow.
Holds the bow vertically and "crawls" with your fingers up and down the stick like a spider, without sliding your hand. Try to keep the bow steady - no swaying. Do not touch the hair.
