What We Learned This Week
These students reached another milestone. Some students played the Twinkle melody while others played the accompaniment. It is challenging to have two different parts playing at the same time. They are growing as musicians.
Archived Information
The Students learned the beginning to the the theme from the Adams Family and began the Twinkle melody.
They took an assessment on the letter names in treble clef and practiced singing some of the songs for the upcoming performance.

The students demonstrated their understanding of using their fingers to play pitches on the violin. They had used their ear to determine where to place their fingers. They learned the letter names of the notes to match their fingering. They can play 0, 1, 2, 3 on the A string: A, B, C#, D. There is a space between the first and second fingers but the second and third fingers are right next to each other.
They reviewed the letter names of the notes on the treble clef staff and A Nice, Nice Christmas, A Super Celebration and Come Forth Every Day. They are working hard to learn the scat in We Wish You a Swingin' Holiday.

- Continue to practice the Accompaniment to Twinkle with the following two rhythm/bowing patterns: Mississippi Hot Dog and Ice Cream Shh Cone.
Check your posture, violin hold and bow hold.
Is your bow staying on the musical highway? Is it moving straight? Is the hot dog or pizza twice as long as Mississippi or Pepperoni? Are you stopping your bow on the shh and then continuing to move your bow up?
Remember to rosin your bow over the weekend.
- Starting with your second finger (middle finger) on the A string, figure out how to play Hot Cross Buns by Ear. Do not look up on the intranet nor look at any sheet music. This is an exercise in ear training in addition to violin playing. Be brave.
- Practice singing your memorized songs:

WOW!. The Fifth Graders are impressive musicians. It is amazing how much musical growth has occurred over the past weeks. The class sounds great playing the accompaniment to Twinkle. We will begin using our fingers next week in preparation of learning the melody. I introduced a treble clef note reading drill that has challenged and excited the students. They are working on increasing the speed of their note reading skills. Students are able to work at their own level challenging themselves to increase their own speed every time they complete the drill. All students are on the beginner level currently. When they score a 500, they may move on to the Intermediate level.

There is some "Fiddling" around taking place in our music classes. These students can set up and take down their music stands, tighten and rosin their bows and play the Accompaniment of Twinkle Twinkle Little Star on their violins. They will be assessed on their playing during our classes next week. The students took an assessment of their Treble Clef note reading skills this week. I am very proud of their accomplishments. Keep up the great work.
Students: Remember to practice every day for 5-10 minutes. Do not just play through the song. Isolate a measure or even just two notes. Work on a clean tone. Is your bow going straight between the bridge and the fingerboard? Are you staying on the musical highway?
They continue to practice singing their songs: Come Forth Every Day, You Are Good, If I Were There and It's a Nice, Nice Christmas in preparation for our Christmas Concert on December 11th at 6:00 PM. All students participate in this educational and fun event. Make sure to mark your calendars. Make sure that you have memorized the following three songs. Practice

If I Were There Mp3 only the refrain

The students are able to set up their stands in record time. They should also practice taking them down quickly. These amazing musicians learned how to rosin their bows this week. Rosin your bow once or twice a week at home. They began playing the first line of the Twinkle Accompaniment. Remember to keep you bow on the "highway" - between the fingerboard and the bridge. Work diligently to keep your bow straight. Have you noticed that bowing and pizzicato happen in different places on your violin. Homework: Practice playing the first line of the Twinkle Accomapniment. Work for a clean smooth tone. Use a straight bow that remains on the "highway."
Be able to sing all of Come Forth Every Day and the Refrain of If I Were There by memory.

Another Great Week in Music!
There was a great deal of fun, laughter and learning in our music classes this week.
The students should know the four open strings: E, A, D, G. They learned how to play pizzicato (plucking). Remember that your right thumb rests against the side of the fingerboard. Reach with your index finger and pluck the string over the fingerboard. Avoid the space between the bridge and the fingerboard. They played through the accompaniment to Twinkle, Twinkle. Twinkle Accompaniment . They also set up their music stands. Make sure that the base is open completely. Next week, we will learn to use the bow.
Homework:
Practice setting up and taking down your music stand. Try to set it up in less than 3 minutes. We will have a contest on Thursday to see who can set up their stand correctly first.
Practice playing the accompaniment to Twinkle pizzicato.
