Masterclass Series is now live!!
David Turner is a Melbourne based Producer, Engineer Guitarist and Composer. David cut his teeth on the indie and punk scene of London in 2005 and 2006 producing independent bands at various studios including the famed Gizzard Studios.
Upon returning to Australia and graduating from the Conservatorium of Music in Queensland, David relocated to Melbourne where he produces records out of his personal suite in the Aviary Recording Studios complex located near the heart of Melbourne’s Art districts. The Aviary houses a good collection of classic microphones and analog outboard gear, amongst vintage synths, instruments and whacky toys.
David is dedicated to the art of experimentation. Driven by a love of quirky vintage gear and techniques, but with an eye on modern recording techniques and apps, he employs both in his constant search to capture the song. His heroes include Brian Wilson, Dave Fridmann, Brian Eno, Burial and John Hopkins and this is apparent in his use of the studio itself as an instrument.
As a guitarist David has played with the Delta Riggs and more recently has performed for Amy Shark at the ARIA awards, JJJ Like a Version, MTV Unplugged and Nova’s Red Room.
David’s recent credits include producing records for ARIA winning artists Amy Shark and Dan Sultan, Country star Casey Barnes, Melbourne based bands such as Ben Wright Smith, Redspencer and Crepes, and international acts such as New York’s Heavy Lids and London’s Soixante Neuf.
David is also a prolific songwriter and has written for artists and sync for over 10 years.
This masterclass series will focus on the “Golden Era” of 1960’s and 1970s record production and mixing. Focussing on traditional record producing which includes core skills including:
Recording to tape
Compression and EQ when recording
Microphone choice and placement
Preproduction essentials
Band preparation
Recording without headphones
Recording live in the same space
We will explore making records with very little computer intervention, with well -ehearsed bands, and the process of live recording in studio to tape for both aesthetic and process reasons. We’ll look at mixing with minimal effects and plug-in use, with a heavy focus on getting the sound right at the source and committing sounds to tape. We’ll throw safety away (no autotune, quantising or recording of DIs) and we’ll learn to trust our ears, trust our gut, trust our skills, and only record when the band is ready to let it bleed!
