Below are the procedures for school cancelations. You will find the different procedures for flex days, e-learning days, remote learning days, and closed days.
Flex Day
Flex Days are a day off for students with no new work given. Flex Days are now for teachers to meet and discuss curriculum, solutions, and assignments for their classes. There are 3 more Flex Days this school year: Sept. 19, January 30, and March 6.
Remote Learning Day
A Remote Learning Day is an UNPLANNED student learning day at home but requires students to get on ZOOM from home. Students will meet with their teachers in each class to receive directions on their lessons and work for the day.
House Bill 1093 passed in May of 2022 states that Remote Learning requires at least 2.5 hours of synchronous learning for elementary students and three (3) hours of a secondary student's day to be comprised of direct instruction from teachers via ZOOM. Individual schools have personalized schedules and guides developed. Students will be aware of their class/teacher expectations should SACS have to issue a Remote Learning Day.
Remote Learning Days were designed to meet the new state statute limiting schools to three eLearning Days and to avoid adding additional days at the end of the school year.
It is expected that every student will abide to zoom etiquette while in Zoom meetings. Most students should be familiar with these rules from a few years ago, and this infographic nicely summarizes it. On zoom, you should join before class time, use your LAST NAME as your listed name, wear school-appropriate clothes, and have your face in camera view. If students do not abide by these rules, the teacher can remove them from the Zoom meeting. If a student does not show up to online class, one of their 10 parent-excused absences (PX) for the school year will be used.
As required by state law, secondary students must attend 3 hours of time on zoom. An announcement will be sent out on ParentSquare to alert families of a cancelation and that students will have a Remote Learning Day. Some important things to note that are different from a normal day of school:
First period starts at 9:30
Join Zoom around 9:20 in case of computer issues. Each Zoom session lasts 20 minutes with 6 minutes allotted for transitioning between meetings.
Students attend Zoom meetings in the same order they have classes each day with 7th period ending at 12:30.
There will be a 30 minute lunch session after 7th period.
In addition to answering questions live during Zoom, teachers will also be available from 1:00-2:30 pm via email to answer student questions about assigned coursework.
e-Learning Day (asynchronous)
A SACS e-Learning Day is an UNPLANNED student learning day at home. e-Learning Days are issued due to a weather cancelation, school emergency, or an event preventing students attending school in person. Students learn from home, at their own pace, ASYNCHRONOUSLY, utilizing CANVAS for both their assignments and to communicate with their teacher(s) throughout the day. There will be no ZOOM instruction with teachers on an e-Learning Day.
State statute now limits all Indiana K-12 schools to three (3) asynchronous e-Learning days due to weather emergencies to be counted toward the 180 required school days.
SACS Issued Closed Days
New this year: Our elementary schools (PK-5 grade) are no longer sending school-issued devices home on a daily basis.
In cases of unexpected weather with no prior warning—such as a sudden fog delay that turns into a full-day cancellation—SACS will cancel school. School will be closed and NO at-home learning is required for any SACS student. If this rare instance occurs, where there is no anticipation or opportunity to prepare, SACS will use the built-in weather makeup day on Monday, February 16, 2026.
However, most weather-related closures—such as snow, ice, or extreme temperatures—are typically forecasted in advance. SACS teachers, including our elementary teams, will proactively send school devices home in preparation for a possible at-home learning day. If this occurs, we will clearly communicate whether the day will follow an eLearning (asynchronous) or Remote Learning (synchronous) format.
