winter guard season conclusion

The Winter Guard season starts immediately after the band season in November and goes all the way to March. During competitions, judges look at the skills presented, but also how everyone performs as a group. Scores are divided into 4 categories: movement, equipment, general effect, and design.  Guard features a variety of dance, flag, rifle, and sabre skills. Junior Varsity participates in Regional A which features developing skills and more lenient criteria. Their show was entitled "Bejeweled" using Taylor Swift's song of the same name. Freshman Nesha Grimes is a dance soloist in JV. She captures the essence of guard by saying "We're a team no matter what." She explains teammates spend so much time together, and they support each other through the show and personal lives.

Varsity participates in "Open Class" which features more advanced skills with stricter criteria. Their show was entitled "Cursed" based on the fortune-teller Madame Zeroni from Holes. Junior Amelia Steinberger finds how the show evolves "from nothing to something really cool" very rewarding, as well as walking off the floor satisfied with their performance. The only freshman Varsity team member, Ry Cartwright, says that guard has taught her to "not just give up when things get hard" and that she shouldn't "get frustrated over the little things" when learning them. In the end, Junior Varsity earned 9th in their Regional A division and Varsity placed 11th in "Open Class." Both teams grew a lot over the season and are gearing up for the next one. The Color guard is hosting clinics to learn how to spin before auditions in early May. Clinics are every Monday from April 8 to April 29 from 3-4:30 PM. Auditions are the week after from May 6-9 to 5-9 PM. No experience is necessary, and middle school and high school students are welcome.

Musical - mamma Mia

School musical season has officially begun! The auditions took place at the beginning of March with each student performing a 30-second piece in front of the directors across two audition days. Once the cast list was set, the group began rehearsing for two hours each practice, focusing on learning the vocals and harmonies for the songs. Senior Nolan Paul, a member of the featured dancers and ensemble, is a part of the musical for the first time. His favorite part about being in a musical is "connecting with the cast and being able to inspire audiences through performance." He is anxious to meet the bar of expectation for this "universally liked" musical. The role of Donna is going to be played by junior Mara Nicholson. She had received a callback for Donna and Dynamos and she had 10 minutes to prepare the song "Mamma Mia" and sing it in front of the directors. This is Mara's first time being in a musical at Homestead, but she has been in show choir for the past two years. She has loved getting to spend time with people who love the show as much as she does. Also, this musical has allowed her to spend time with girls that she didn't get to spend much time with during the busy show choir season. While this is a stressful time in preparation for some, this has been a fun experience for most, including freshman Ella Moore. She is excited to be a part of her first Homestead production after being a part of 21 productions for other groups in the past. They will perform on the auditorium stage on Friday May 10 at 7:30pm, Saturday May 11 at 2pm and 7:30pm, and Sunday May 12 at 2pm. Mark your calendars!
