Homestead on the National Stage

Boys' Track and Field

Homestead had three track and field athletes represented at the national level. Seniors Eli Griffin, Ethan Widenhoefer, and Jacob Martin all competed in Boston, Massachusetts for the New Balance Indoor Nationals, a meet full of some of America's best high school track and field athletes. Though a meet of this caliber can be extremely daunting, these athletes rose to the challenge and put on a great performance, representing Homestead well.

For Eli, this was his second time qualifying for the meet. Eli believes this helped him know when to arrive and when to warm up. It also helped his understanding of the track and he was prepared to use bigger poles during the meet. NCAA nationals was held at the same facility just a few days prior. With this big accomplishment done, he set his sights on Homestead Track and Field. His main goals for pole vaulting are to get the school record 16'9" and to win both indoor and outdoor state. He would also like to jump at the state record 17'6 1/2".

This was Ethan's third year attending the meet. He came in understanding how the event is run and the type of competition he would be up against. His favorite part of the experience was the time he spent with his teammates and seeing the city. Ethan explained that national level meets like this help remind him that there is "always going to be someone better." Looking forward to the rest of the season, he would like to jump 7' and win the state meet.

This was Jacob's first time competing at the New Balance Indoor Nationals. New Balance makes the experience very special and Jacob enjoyed the opportunity to "compete on a track in front of thousands of people." He took time to explore Boston, visiting historical places like the Freedom Trail. Looking forward to the outdoor season, Jacob has big goals. He would like to break a school record in the 300 meter hurdles. While competing on the national stage allows him to challenge himself, Jacob will have other Homestead track athletes driving him to be better, and he hopes to "push them in the same way."

Dance

Every three years, the Homestead Dance Team travels to Florida for Nationals. This is a big highlight in the memory book for the dancers on the team. This year, Varsity Jazz placed 10th at Nationals and Varsity Hip Hop placed 3rd, the highest Homestead Jazz team has placed at Nationals.
