Introduction to the Visual Arts
(9, 10, 11, 12)
Full Yr., 1 Cr.
Pre-requisite: None
Course Description: This course may be used to satisfy the Art requirement for graduation. Studio in Graphic Arts is an entry level course that is split into two halves, one being traditional Studio in Art and the other a computer based de- sign course in Graphic Design & Advertising. This course is specifically designed to accommodate art students who would like to start their art sequence with a more well-rounded foundation, rather than a complete focus on either Studio in Art or Media Arts. In the Studio portion of the year, students will focus on traditional fine arts which include: drawing, painting, sculpture and other design work. The com- plimentary half of the year will focus on computer aided graphic design, advertising, and video editing. Students who take this class will benefit from all the knowledge, experi- ence, technology and materials of Media Arts and Studio in Art, but in a faster paced, condensed setting. After the com- pletion of this course, not only will students have a well-rounded foundation of fine art skills and computer skills, they will be able to successfully advance to the art department’s more challenging courses with a solid background no matter the course.
Homework: Outside of class assignments may be given; the majority of the project work will be done in class. Addi- tional references and resources may also be required of stu-dents outside of the classroom.
Summer Assignment: None
Assessments: Advertising Design is a project-based course, therefore assessments are authentic. Authentic as- sessment is achieved in the form of critique and portfolio de- velopment.
