A Comprehensive and Developmental Program
The goal of school counselors is to teach students skills to help them through developmental stages of life and to use these skills on a daily basis. To accomplish this, school counselors provide and carry out a comprehensive counseling program which focuses on the uniqueness of students in three areas of development: academic, career, and personal/social. Designed for ALL students, student competencies provide goals that drive the program components including the guidance curriculum, responsive services, individual planning, and system support.
The Four Components of a Comprehensive School Counseling Program
Guidance Curriculum: the purpose is to assist students in developing skills they need to enhance their personal, social, education, and career development.
Individual Planning: the purpose is to guide all students as they plan, monitor, and manage their own educational, career, and personal-social development.
Responsive Services: the purpose is to intervene on behalf of those students who have immediate personal needs.
System Support: the purpose is to demonstrate the counselor's support of the total school program.
The Developmental Needs of Middle School Students
Middle school is an exciting but sometimes frustrating time for students as well as for their parents and teachers. Transition is the key word. Throughout the middle school years, physical and psychological changes abound. During their journey from childhood to adolescence, students are characterized by:
Being very active, yet easily fatigued due to rapid physical growth.
Searching for their own unique identity, turning more towards their peers rather than to their parents for ideas and affirmation.
Feeling extremely sensitive to comments from others.
Relying heavily on friends to provide comfort, understanding, and approval.
Why Middle School Counselors?
The middle school years can be positive ones of self discovery for children. Together, professional middle school counselors, parents, teachers, administrators, and community members can help students focus on the journey of transition through a collaborative effort using a comprehensive developmental counseling program, patience, understanding, and above all, caring.
The SMS Comprehensive School Counseling Program Mission
As a professional school counselor in Sabine ISD, it is my mission to advocate for and empower every student to achieve academic success, personal and social growth, and career readiness while supporting district and campus administrative staff and teachers in providing a safe, orderly environment where the educational process promotes lifelong learning, independent thinking, social responsibility, collaborative work ethic, personal planning, and technological proficiency.
Sabine ISD Mission
The mission of the Sabine Independent School District is to provide appropriate, challenging opportunities, in a safe and positive environment, for all students to develop their potential academically, mentally, emotionally, physically, and socially in a way that each student is motivated and enabled to become a confident and competent problem-solver, communicator, collaborative worker, user of technology, and life-long learner so that the student is prepared to become an effective citizen and productive member of society.
