Guidance lessons in 8th grade take place throughout the year. Over the time we have together, students will be involved in a series of self-exploration to help them plan for high school and start thinking about life after graduation.
Regardless of what path students choose, planning early will help them set personal goals and utilize their high school years to set them on the right path for future success.
Guidance lesson topics include:
Texas Reality Check - how much money is required to live on your own?
Career Cruising Matchmaker - what occupations match your interests?
Career Cruising Skills Assessment - what occupations match your current skills?
Career Cruising and Map My Grad Career Exploration
Personal Graduation Plans and High School Course Selections
By the end of our time together, students will have a better idea of what their high school years will entail as well as what life after high school can look like. Parents will have an opportunity to participate in high school planning by attending our "Map My Grad" parent night which will be held in February. More information to come on this event.
The 2020-2021 Every Child Has Access resource guide (ECHA) debuted on August 10 at the Partners in Education Conference! Created in 2016 at the request of three Longview superintendents, the magazine offers informational resources for issues families and children commonly face. The Longview Chamber of Commerce has updated ECHA annually to ensure the information is accurate and includes as many organizations as possible.
There are over 60 organizations serving the East Texas area (primarily, but not limited to Longview) included in this year's ECHA. From recreation to mental health services, from therapies to clothing and food donations - the solutions ECHA can provide families run the gamut. It is not meant solely for people who are struggling. Those seeking a certain service for their child, but they don't know which organizations to contact, can also benefit greatly from the Community Resources chart.
Sometimes life gets challenging or overwhelming. The Osseo Area Learning Center developed a Calming Room to help students and staff explore strategies to deal with those challenges. When you are out in the world and there isn't a calming room, here are some resources to help you find new ways to manage life and emotions. Click on the link to the left.

In a time where there is a great sense of unknown, I've been trying to decide what resources might help you. The first idea that popped into my head is the practice of mindfulness. At times life can be chaotic and challenge our emotional stability (that sounds like now). Mindfulness teaches us to slow down and pay attention to what is happening right now. Over time, mindfulness practices can have many positive impacts on your mental and physical health.
So, when you're feeling a little overwhelmed, try some of the activities in my Mindfulness PowerPoint (aka Google Slide). I will continue to add to this.
