The Salish Sea Safari: Week One Phylum Porifera

We are so fortunate to have Matilda and Rachel from the World Fisheries Trust in our classroom for the next several Mondays. Each week they are teaching us about different inter-tidal species who live in the Salish Sea (the water around our island before the Pacific Ocean). This week we learned about the phylum (group of creatures) porifera (creatures with holes). We even got to recreate the experiment shown in the video with sea sponges in our classroom! Please chat with your child about what they know about sea sponges.

Salish Seas Program

During our six week Salish Seas program, we learned about many of the creatures which inhabit the our local tidal zones. Students learned about phylums, took notes, completed activities, and explored creatures through hands-on experiences. Check out some of the photos from our experience!

The Salish Sea: Week Two

Phylum Cnidaria

Rachel and Nicole visited us to teach us about the phylum (group of things) cnidaria (having nettles). We learned that three of the creatures in this group are jellyfish, sea anemones, and coral. Some of these creatures have a medusa body plan and some have a polyp body plan. Attached is a video which shows coral polyps up close so you can see them waving around and pulling in things to eat.
