Good readers use the title and cover of the text, picture clues inside the text and background knowledge to predict what will happen. As they read, students will confirm or discard predictions and continue to make new ones.

Ask students to look at the title and pictures before they read. Ask them what they already know about the topic. What information do they think the author will want to share about this topic? Use one of the prompts below to guide student thinking:

I think I will learn ______
As they read, have students anticipate what the author might share next. Have students refine or revise their predictions based on the information in the text.
