The end of this research journey has approached...and to do so I wanted to end with a conclusion and reflection of my journey.
I have also included a link to my final research paper for anyone interested in seeing the end "product" along with the slides I used in my oral presentation.
Abstract from research paper:
This research paper examines the relationship between daily transportation styles, physical activity, and happiness. Through a survey, this study compares two regions, Denmark and Colorado, in order to get a gauge of how a day to day factor, such as transportation, can have an impact on one’s health, both physically and mentally. Other studies have found connections between physical and mental health as they heavily influence each other. Regular physical activity can improve mood and cognitive functions, while simultaneously reducing stress, anxiety, and depression. In contrast, a lack of exercise can lead to health issues such as low self-esteem, obesity, and other physical conditions. Up to 77% of Americans fail to find time to incorporate daily exercise into their schedule, and experience rising mental health issues. Meanwhile, Denmark is reported to be known to be one of the healthiest and happiest countries. The major lifestyle difference between the two regions inspired this research with intent to find a suggestion that would increase activity levels in America, without excessively altering one’s routine, while having a positive impact on mental health. Utilizing a survey allowed the researchers to gather data on individuals' happiness levels, which was measured through analysis of life satisfaction and stress levels, and their activity trends. Further questions collected data on popular transportation types in each region, allowing all three variables to be compared. It was found that those with regular access to public transportation and living in an area that promotes cycling, tend to have lower levels of stress and higher levels of happiness. The survey also found that public transportation evokes activity in forms of walking and biking to and from transit stations.
REFLECTION
After extensive research on the topic I studied - how transportation impacts health, physically and mentally - I learned many interesting statistics on mental health. I had an idea of the low mental health rates in America, but I was unaware of to what extent and realized that the mental health amoungs American's is contiuously getting worse, and becoming one of the leading causes of death amoungst the youth. This is something that I fear will only get worse, but after my research have found a solution that could be implemented and aid in fixing the mental health for upcoming generations. My research was also very futuristic, where it would take years to build a successful public transportation system in Colorado, however I also learned that it is not impossible. With the proper funding and execution, a public transportation system like the one that exists in Denmark, is feasible. Although I found success in my research proccess, there are some things I could improve upon during my next project...how I outreached my survey could be better. I feel like I got the responses/content I needed but in the future I think I need a more extensive way to get the survey to a wider range of audiences, that is if my next study involves human test subjects.
Throughout this proccess, I created an oral defense presentation, followed by a research paper (linked above). While created my presentation, I learned the importance of knowledge and confidence. When presenting verbally, it is important to make yourself the presentation, because what you are speaking about is the information you want the audience to pay attentions to. Additionally, the importance of a simple slideshow to work as an aid to what you are saying, not a distraction. I learned that slideshow colors and simplicity is key to having a successful presentation, which I believe I did. I also learned how to execute complex ideas in a simplified way. While writing my research paper, I struggled with repetition and word choice, which was something I think I have now improved upon. There are only so many words/phrases for "public transportation" so I had to be creative on how else to speak about my topic without over-using those words. I also learned what an appendix was, and how to create one, which can be seen in my research paper. This I feel will be aplicable to my future as I continue executing complex and advanced ideas in a way that the mass majority will be able to comprehend.
This class helped me grow in so many ways; as a researcher, student, and overall human-being. I have yet to engage in such a research process, so in all aspects this class has taught me how to execute a research project. Additionally, it advanced my analytical thinking skills which will come usefull in almost all aspects both educationally and in the real world. As a student this class has enhanced my critical thinking skills and problem solving. I originally had a research question in mind, and while conducting my preliminary research, I struggled to move forward. I had to re-assess and change directions entirely, which at first seemed stressful and a lot of work. However, it led me to my current research project which I am satisfied and much happier with this result than I would have been if I continued to let myself struggle. This class challeneged me in some other ways as way. I began my research proccess while being in Denmark, which required me to zoom call and email with my instructor in order to stay caught up with the class. Due to the time difference, this was a new experience for me but it taught me patience and further problem solving. Overall, this class has also helped me feel more confident, specifically academically. I am proud of my final paper and did better in my oral presentation than I expected to, which made me realize I needed to be more confident in myself and my work because it typically is better than I credit myself for.
Mrs. Dobos, my instructor/teacher. I want to thank Mrs. Dobos for helping me throughout my research journey and her patience with me. She was so kind as to accomodate me special "needs" as I completed half of the course overseas. The 8 hour time difference was not easy, but she took time out of her busy day to meet with me one on one, outside of class. She was flexible with my deadlines as well and understanding of the challenges I faced while being in Denmark. Without her, I would not haeve been able to complete this course, or be where I am today in my research journey.
I also want to thank my brother for being supportive and helpful during my project. He was with me in Denmark while begining my research, and has experience with conductiung his own research. He was able to guide me and give me advice throughout the year to help me produce the best final prooduct I possibly could.
me attending the University of Denver in the fall of 2023, where I will study Real Estate. I also hope to complete my real estate licensing class this summer and co-sign with an internship while studying in college. This way, when I graduate DU, I will have some work experience already and can jumpstart my career :)
