Content
Over my research, I have learned that the main form of a conservation effort to help porpoise species is putting fishing bans in place. There are some situations where that helps, like the Yangtze Finless Porpoise, but it does not work in situations like the vaquita, where the ban does not help the population.
Product
The main thing I learned from my academic paper and POD is learning better public speaking skills. Before this research, I was always super nervous to present to anyone, but now that I could present my research project I worked on all year I feel much more confident with my public speaking
Process
I have learned useful skills about overcoming challenges and adapting throughout my research project. I have had to adapt to the lack of data to continue on with my research. As I continue on to learn more research skills, I want to learn more with learning how to overcome and change my research if I need to do that.
Using the skills that I gained from my Research over this year, I will continue onto Montana State University in Bozeman, Montana to study computer engineering.
Acknowledgments
I would like to say a special thanks to my parents, Mrs. Dobos, and Mrs. Wills for all of their support over the span of my research and helping me continue on with my research.
ABSTRACT
Around the world, there are different amounts of conservation efforts are being made for the seven species of porpoises, which are all in the Phocoenidae family, which includes small-toothed, smalled-mouthed whales with a triangular dorsal fin. As the vaquita, one species of these porpoises is becoming closer to going extinct, understanding the impacts of these conservation efforts is critical in order to see what efforts are most effective for the habitat that they live in. The research question asked how have conservation efforts changed over time in the different regions where porpoise populations reside. To answer this question, the specific conservation efforts in place for each porpoise were investigated to understand how the different conservation efforts are protecting the porpoise populations at different time points. Then data on the population change during and after the effort was made was documented to see if the effort was effective. If the population slope has less of a decline or even an incline in the population, then that effort will be counted as effective in protecting the species. The data found are that the main effort made is in the form of fishing bans. Depending on the location of the habitat, organizations and governing bodies around the area would put more effort into conservation than others. If there was something recent that happened in the location, there would be even more efforts being made. The original hypothesis of, the location of the porpoises’ habitat does not affect the amount of effort that is put into conservation, was found to be incorrect. There is a found connection between conservation efforts and the location of the habitat because of stuff that happens in the region. The data taken from this research can be used to help give evidence to using similar species in similar habitats to know if an effort has a greater chance of being successful for an endangered species population.
