Blog #3-
What is happening with my process?
Since my last blog post, I have made great progress. I only have one book left, and I have begun to analyze. I have noticed multiple things in each of my books.
The Hunger Games: Suzanne Collins (the author) writes the synopsis as, "In a dystopian future, the totalitarian nation of Panem is divided into 12 districts and the Capitol. Each year two young representatives from each district are selected by lottery to participate in The Hunger Games. Part entertainment, part brutal retribution for a past rebellion, the televised games are broadcast throughout Panem. The 24 participants are forced to eliminate their competitors while the citizens of Panem are required to watch. When 16-year-old Katniss' young sister, Prim, is selected as District 12's female representative, Katniss volunteers to take her place. She and her male counterpart, Peeta, are pitted against bigger, stronger representatives, some of whom have trained for this their whole lives.". (IMDB)
I've found:
Katniss tends to be very masculine traited
Peeta seems to be very feminine traited
Catching Fire: From IMDB, "Katniss and Peeta's unprecedented co-victory in the 74th Hunger Games stirs an uprising. President Snow visits Katniss to threaten the lives of everyone she knows and holds dear if she doesn't do all she can to toe the line and quell the unrest. As her best efforts fail, Plutarch Heavensbee (a former games-master, now returned) meets with Snow to implement a Quarter Quell, by which to gather all former Hunger Game victors and have them eliminate each other. Katniss and Peeta end up in the Quarter Quell but must form alliances in order to survive; however, those with whom Katniss prefers to ally herself seem to be for emotional rather than tactical reasons." (IMDB)
I've found:
There is a lot of affection in this novel because Peeta and Katniss are in love and they don't want to lose each other.
Not as many traits in this because there is a lot of description.
Mockingjay: Sparknotes summarizes the plot, "Katniss Everdeen has been rescued from the Quarter Quell arena, only to discover that she has become the pawn in someone else’s game. Her home, District 12, has been obliterated by the Capitol, and she now lives in District 13. Supposedly destroyed by the Capitol, District 13 is the organizing force of the rebellion. Twelve districts in Panem have taken up arms against the cruelty of President Snow and the exploitation by the Capitol. Katniss must now serve as the face of the rebellion, their Mockingjay, or forfeit the lives of her loved ones: her mother, her sister Prim, her friend Gale Hawthorne, and her fellow Hunger Games victor Peeta Mellark. She leverages her power over the rebellion’s leader, Alma Coin, to her advantage. She soon discovers that her efforts will cost her dearly." (SparkNotes)
Just to note: the information that I have shared that I have found does seem very general, but it is because what I have really found to be descriptive is my data! You will see that soon:)
Above is me deep in research in Ms.Dobos's room.
The Maze Runner: James Dashner's novel is written in a synopsis from IMDB, "Awakening in an elevator, remembering nothing of his past, Thomas emerges into a world of about thirty teenage boys, all without past memories, who have learned to survive under their own set of rules in a completely enclosed environment, subsisting on their own agriculture and supplies. With a new boy arriving every thirty days, the group has been in "The Glade" for three years, trying to find a way to escape through the Maze that surrounds their living space (patrolled by cyborg monsters named 'Grievers'). They have begun to give up hope when a comatose girl arrives with a strange note, and their world begins to change with the boys dividing into two factions: those willing to risk their lives to escape and those wanting to hang onto what they've got and survive." (IMDB)
I've found:
This book is harder to analyze- there could be many limitations here because the writing is very descriptive.
Thomas is actually very feminine traited
Yet, the masculine traits seem to outweigh his femininity because the other boys provide so many other masculine traits.
The Scorch Trials: From IMDB, "After surviving the first Trial set by the creators: the Maze, Thomas, Newt, Minho and the other ravaged Gladers must survive in a decimated world overcome with the deadly disease known as the Flare. As Thomas and the gang try to complete the second Trial their adventure is filled with love, deceit, and death."
I've found:
It is hard to find the traits in this book because it is difficult to find the actual motives of people.
Thomas stays pretty similar, but there is much less competition.
The Death Cure: I am not going to provide a synopsis for this book because I am just starting it, so I haven't made conclusions yet.
Here is me smiling, excited to start my last book!
As I have been working through this data, I have been compiling my final gender bias term-numbers into a spreadsheet that will be presented as my final data. The spreadsheet shows the different numbers of each term, and the final totals. This will finalize whether I think each book is masculinely or femininely traited, so I can compare them to their different gendered authors.
Above is a picture of my spreadsheet with some of my earlier data in it.
My goal hasn't changed much since my last blog post. I am hoping to finish my research by March 12. After that I will be analyzing data for almost two weeks. Then I will begin to create my presentations and my final paper. The largest change in my process is that I do not think that I will be continuing with statistical analysis. It just does not fit into my research plan. In all, I am feeling very excited about the upcoming finishing of my project! I am anticipating that it is going to end well! Looking forward to updating you all soon.
