Plan of Care

Recap from the Diagnosis:
My research project is all about job satisfaction in the medical field and the possible correlation with malpractice cases. Currently, there is little to no research on the job satisfaction of specifically surgeons or on malpractice cases. This is incredibly important to be researched because job satisfaction has shown a direct link to the quality of care. To be able to gain this information, I have sent out surveys and will be conducting interviews with surgeons.
The picture to the left is an image of my sending out emails with links to the survey and information about my project.
My Progress:
Since the last blog post, I have created the survey and worked on sending it out. This has consisted of sending emails to surgeons I know, posting on Nextdoor, and asking other surgeons to send it to their coworkers. By doing this, I have been able to get a few responses from the survey. Hopefully, as I keep sending out emails, more individuals will be able to respond to the survey so I am able to get data for my research. From the responses I have received, my hypothesis is incorrect. I have started seeing a trend of surgeons being satisfied with their profession. I have been surprised by the high number of malpractice cases that each surgeon has reported. I am hoping to continue to see a trend with the responses, whether it rejects or supports my hypothesis.
Questions from the Job Satisfaction Survey:
What is the size of your hospital?
What state do you live in?
What is your annual income?
How would you rate your job satisfaction on a scale of 1-10?
Would you like to provide any other information about your job satisfaction or any other descriptive words to describe it?
How would you rate the environment of the hospital you work on (on a scale of 1-10)?
Would you change anything about how you are treated as an employee?
How would you rate your relationships with your coworkers (on a scale of 1-10)?
How would you rate your boss (on a scale of 1-10)?
How many malpractice cases have named you?
How would you rate the severity of these cases?
How would you say these cases impacted you mentally?
Would you be open to interviewing with me? This would provide me with further information on this information. Anonymity will still be kept throughout all of this.

Choices:
I had to decide who to email and how to decide how to ask them to answer the email and send it out to others. One problem I ran into with this is being able to find emails of surgeons across the country. I had to ask individuals in the medical field if they would be able to send it to surgeons that they know to try and get responses.
To try and get the awareness of my project out, I decided to post on Nextdoor to try and get more responses. There is a risk with having individuals who are not surgeons or are making their responses untruthful. However, for this particular situation, I felt that the benefits of having more responses outweighed the possible risk of having untruthful answers. For many of the survey questions, it would be difficult to lie on so that can eliminate some of the false answers.
Changes:
After I had sent out the initial round of 100 emails, I got one back saying that the links were not working. Initially, I was very stressed because this would mean that I would have to resend those emails with an updated link and I didn't know how to fix the survey to work. However, I figured out that I had to copy the survey to my personal email and get the link that way. By doing this, it allowed for the link to let anyone respond to it, rather than just people with a DCSD email. Although, I did have to send a follow up email afterwards to give them the updated link.
Since I have fixed the email, I have been reciveving very few responses, which may be a large limitation to my research. So, I have made it so I have the ability to focus on the interviews slightly more than the averages and numbers that I would get from the survey.
Next Steps:
To continue my research, I will need to continue to send out emails with my survey. I will need also need to start setting up interviews with the surgeons who have offered to do an anonymous interview with me. Next, I will analyze the results of the survey (after I have determined I have received enough emails) to figure out the averages and start working on the statistical tests.
