Romantic Comedies have been one of the most popular pieces of films to come out of Hollywood. However, there relevance can be traced back to Shakespearean plays such as Twelfth Night and a Midsummer's Night Dream. Shakesphere took romantic themes from Italian poets and added in comedy to showcase the absurdity of romance in English courts. However, that is some of the only research done on romantic comedies's releveance as social commentaries. While many write them off as mindless chick-flicks, I want to explore how throughout time romantic comedies challenge the role of women in society as did their inspiration William Shakespeare.
