Hello! My name is Shreya Behera and I am a senior and studying my fourth and final year at Rock Canyon High School. Since my first-grade production of Aladdin, I became obsessed with the world of film and theater. This has led to continuous participation in Rock Canyon's Performing Arts Department. My favorite plays and musicals have always been one with romantic and whimsical undertones. Movies like Sleepless in Seattle, When Harry Met Sally, and How to Lose a Guy in 10 days become my favorite pieces of film to Broadway Hits of Hadestown and The Sound of Music. Love and Romance were as essential to me as the air I breathed.
Feminst thought came into my life way later than the first fairytales. It was in seventh grade where I learned about women's rights. From Seneca Falls to the ERA movement I became shocked by how late women recieved the most basic of rights in history. However this wasn't just a history lesson but opened my eyes to real societal constructs.
The South Asian community I grew up's bias towards men became more and more apparent to me after this lesson. From mothers begging for sons to the older brother getting away with something I would be grounded for; double standards around my community became more and more obvious. These double standards inspired me to get involved in women rights through running my own non-profit Bake My Day; monthly bake-sales dedicated to public health causes surrounding under-privileged groups, to Speech and Debate providing me with skills to advocate for underrepresented groups. Combining my love of film and social justice was not even a question for me when entering Advanced Placement Research.
