Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is the process through which children and teens develop the skills they need to manage emotions, build healthy relationships, make responsible decisions, and set and achieve goals. SEL helps students understand themselves and others, which in turn supports both academic success and personal well-being.
The five key areas of SEL are:
Self-awareness – Recognizing emotions, values, and strengths.
Self-management – Managing stress, emotions, and behaviors.
Social awareness – Showing empathy and understanding others’ perspectives.
Relationship skills – Communicating clearly, listening, and resolving conflicts.
Responsible decision-making – Making safe, respectful, and thoughtful choices.
When students strengthen these skills, they’re more likely to thrive—not just in school, but in life.
