The Athletic Option program is available to any Junior or Senior Athlete who is currently participating on a Varsity Athletic Team. Athletes may exercise this option in lieu of Physical Education Class for a maximum of two academic quarters, while their sport is in session. You may only exercise this option once per athletic season. During this time, Juniors will be assigned to a Study Hall instead of attending their Physical Education Class. Senior Athletes will be given a Free Period instead of attending their Physical Education Class. Once the marking period has ended the student-athletes are required to return to their Physical Education Classes.
If you choose to pursue Athletic Option, please note that you will be receiving either a Pass or Fail for your Physical Education class. Also, any student who is removed from a team during their season, for any reason, must immediately return to their assigned Physical Education Class or receive further consequences.
Athletic Option will only be available during the 1st month of each semester. So if you do not get your Athletic Options forms submitted on time, it will be denied.

Juniors and Seniors who participate in an approved Out-of-District Athletic Option (ODAO), which includes sustained, vigorous, and organized physical activity, are eligible to opt out of Physical Education Class. If the Rye Neck Athletics Department offers the sport that the student is applying for ODAO, the student MUST participate on the school team during the interscholastic season. Each applicant is only eligible to receive ODAO for 1 quarter per activity/sport. There is no exception to this rule.
Student Athletes may exercise ODAO, and/or Athletic Option, in lieu of PE Class for a maximum of TWO academic quarters per school year, while their sport/activity is in session. The activity needs to operate at a minimum of 120 hours per season. Juniors who participate in ODAO will be placed in a study hall during their scheduled PE class, as designated by their guidance counselor. Seniors who participate in ODAO will receive a free period in place of their PE class.
Until this application is approved, students are expected to attend and participate in Physical Education class. Students who do not participate in PE while the application is being approved will forfeit their eligibility to opt out. Once approved, Athletes will receive an email verification reiterating the rules of the Athletic Option, which ends on the last day of the quarter. At which point, the student must return to their scheduled PE Class.
