Discovery students continue carrying on the tradition of the Lincoln School’s community garden through this fall rooted in responsibility, teamwork, and community pride. Last year’s third-grade Discovery students, now at Pierrepont, originally planned and planted the garden, learning the importance of giving back. They harvested vegetables and herbs, celebrating the fresh produce they grew in a fresh salad at the end of the year.
Now, this fall, the current Discovery students took on the responsibility of maintaining the garden, demonstrating strong citizenship skills by caring for a shared school space that benefits the school community. Students worked collaboratively to showcase the giant sunflowers that flourished over the summer, as well as tasting delicious grape tomatoes off the ripened vines. Through their teamwork, respect for nature, and commitment to the school environment, students represented what it means to be active and caring citizens.
Lincoln School second-grade students participated in a walking tour of Rutherford to understand the history of their town. Students explored important architecture – past and present – as they learned all about the Borough of Trees. Stops along the tour included the Borough Hall courtroom and the Rutherford Public Library. Before returning to school, they enjoyed a treat at Dairy Queen and even met Mr. Potor, their retired gym teacher.
