Articulation Strategies for home and the Classroom
Check Hearing!!! ****
Identify the sound or sounds that you consider problematic
Check the developmental table to determine if the child is developmentally ready to produce the target sound/sounds. Remember that this chart is only a guideline. Children develop at their own rate depending on the environment, exposure to language, cognitive maturity, etc.
Circle or highlight the sound, syllable, or word(s) in spelling or reading materials
Speak to the student to explain what he/she needs to differently (ex. Make sounds more clearly). Use the sound that is being targeted, not the letter name (ex. “sss” not “es”)
Visually or auditorally model the correct sound, stressing that sound. The use of Phonics sheets is a great tool.
Focus on the sound/sounds at the beginning of a word
Remember that not all sounds are said or heard in many words
Ruse pictures of similar sounding words. Say each word while pointing to the picture
Make cards with target sounds and cards with vowels. Model the combined sounds for the student.
Make up model carrier phrases combined with a word containing the targeted sound (ex. I like ______, I see______, and this is a/an_______.)
Have the student, or you, cut out pictures of items that have the targeted sound and make a workbook for the student to practice at home with the parents.
