Basson, Earl

Earl is ’n dosent by die Fakulteit Opvoedkunde van die Kaapse Skiereiland Universiteit vir Tegnologie in Suid-Afrika. Hy doseer Afrikaanse taalkunde en letterkunde sowel as metodiek van Afrikaansonderrig. Hy is tans besig met sy PhD in Afrikaans en Nederlands, waar hy ondersoek instel na die herstandaardisering vanAfrikaans.

Bogović, René

Born in Croatia, Rene grew up in Italy during the Yugoslav Wars. Bilingual by necessity, he became an avid language learner. Multilingual competence allowed him to live and connect to people’s stories across Croatia, Italy, India, Czechia, Canada, and finally South Africa. Since 2017, as part of his dissertation in sociology at the University of Toronto, he has been exploring the potential of language in bridging long-standing class and racial divides. He learnt Afrikaans to fluency and became involved with South African theatre and arts festivals. Hisethnography focuses on the ways arts promote cultural change, refurbishing Afrikaans into a force of inclusivity, cultural restitution, and unity within South African multilingualism. When not researching, he climbs mountains.

Bonthuys, Marni

Marni is ’n dosent in Afrikaans en Nederlands aan die Universiteit van Wes-Kaapland en ’n nadoktorale medewerker aan die Universiteit Gent se Sentrum vir Afrikaans en die Studie van Suid-Afrika. Haar navorsing handel oor resente Afrikaanse en Nederlandstalige poësie met spesifieke fokus op kanonisering, identiteitstemas en gender.

Burger, Bibi

Bibi doseer Afrikaanse letterkunde by die Universiteit van Pretoria, Suid-Afrika. Sy is ’n 2021-2023 Iso Lomso-genoot by die Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study, waar sy navorsing doen oor die interseksionaliteit (aldan nie) in Afrikaanse feministiese literatuur.

Du Plessis, Pieter

Pieter is currently a teacher at Maastricht University in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. He holds an MPhil in Anthropology from the University of Cape Town (South Africa) and a MA in Women’s and Gender studies (Cum Laude) from Utrecht University (Netherlands) and University of Granada (Spain). His research is predominantly of anthropological nature and is concerned with issues of whiteness, coloniality, gender, sexuality and political ecology/environmentalism.

Koch, Jerzy

Jerzy is professor aan die Mickiewicz-Universiteit in Poznań, Pole, navorsingsgenoot van die Universiteit van die Vrystaat (2001) en buitengewone hoogleraar aan die Universiteit Stellenbosch (2021). Hy is verkose lid van SAAWK (2005) en Academia Europaea (2012). Sy werke omvat o.a. Outsider onder de zijnen. Vormen van xenofanie in de Afrikaanse roman (2002) en A History of South African Literature. Afrikaans Literature. Part One: From the 17th to the 19th Century (2015). In druk is deel twee van sy literatuurgeskiedenis A History of South African Literature. Afrikaans Literature. Part Two: The Period of Emancipation 1900 – 1930 (beplan vir 2022). Hy het talle literêre vertalings gepubliseer (Multatuli, Mulisch, Kouwenaar, Claus, Rijneveld, Breytenbach, Krog, Stockenström e.a.) asook ʼn bundel Afrikaanse gedigte Pleks van plaas (2020).

Krog, Antjie

Antjie is ‘n Suid-Afrikaanse digter, skrywer, vertaler, en academicus. Naas haar digterskap was sy ook redakteur van die Suid-Afrikaanse tydskrif Die Suid-Afrikaan en het sy as joernalis verslag gelewer van die Waarheids- en Versoeningskomissie. Sy het talle pryse en toekennings in sowel Suid-Afrika en die buiteland ontvang vir haar digkuns, non-fiksiewerk en rol as public intellectual. In Nederland is sy veral bekend vanweë haar optredes by Poetry International en Winternachten. In 2018 het sy die Nederlandse literatuurprys, Gouden Ganzenveer, ontvang. Aan die Universiteit van Wes-Kaapland (UWC) is sy betrokke by die UWC Creates kreatiewe skryfwerkprogram. Tans is sy gasskrywer aan die Universiteit van Gent.

Maessen, Francine

Francine doet een promotie-onderzoek over trauma en identiteit in het oeuvre van Breyten Breytenbach bij de Universiteit van Amsterdam. Ze studeerde in 2019 af van de master Literary Studies: Literature in Society aan de universiteit van Leiden met een scriptie over de toepassing van traumatheorie op Afrikaanse anti-apartheidspoëzie. Daarnaast is ze werkzaam bij het Zuid-Afrikahuis en schrijft ze recensies van (Zuid-Afrikaanse) literatuur en poëzie voor verschillende platforms.

Nel, Marita

Marieta is tans Inhoudspesialis vir die Onderwys by Penguin Random House nadat sy al die jare Nasionale Bestuurder: Skole en Biblioteke by LAPA Uitgewers was. Sy het voorgraads aan die Universiteit van Stellenbosch studeer met Afrikaans/Nederlands, Sielkunde en Geografie as hoofvakke. Behalwe vir ‘n onderwysdiploma het sy ook ‘n dubbele honneursgraad en ‘n MA in Afrikaans/Nederlands aan die Universiteit van Kaapstad behaal. Sy was deur die jare betrokke by verskeie onderwyspublikasies soos bv. die taalhandboekreekse Afrikaans ons Taal en Platinum; kortverhaalbundels soos Sweef, Skreeu, Ink en ander verhale en die Perfekte brander en ander verhale en letterkundegidse soos Vlymskerp, Verse vir die Vraestelen Kortpad. Sy het ook vir SASNEV die Nederlandse lespakket ontwikkel. Sy tree gereeld op by slypskole waar sy Afrikaansonderwysers oplei. Behalwe vir haar groot liefde vir Afrikaans en die onderrig daarvan, het sy ook ‘n passie vir misdaadfiksie en die ontwikkeling daarvan in Afrikaans. Sy werk op die oomblik aan 'n PhD voorstel onder leiding van Margriet van der Waal (Universiteit van Amsterdam).

Pieterse, Henning

Henning publiseer poësie, kortverhale en vertalings. Hy was eindredakteur van John Boje se ’n Keur uit die Pelgrimsverhale van Geoffrey Chaucer (1989), wat bekroon is met die Akademieprys vir Vertaalde Werk (1990). Vir sy eerste digbundel, Alruin (1989), ontvang hy die Eugène Maraisprys (1990) en die Ingrid Jonkerprys (1991) en vir sy tweede digbundel, Die burg van hertog Bloubaard (2000), die Hertzogprys (2002). Hy publiseer Omdat ons alles is (kortverhale, 1998), ’n vertaling van Rilke se Duineser Elegien (2007) wat bekroon word met die Nedbank-Akademieprys vir Vertaalde Werk (2008) en Tussen die abjekte en die eteriese. ’n Keur uit die poësie van Michel Houellebecq (2018). Pieterse was tussen 1992 en 2002 Hoofredakteur van Tydskrif vir Letterkunde. Hy was ’n professor en direkteur van die Eenheid vir Kreatiewe Skryfkuns aan die Universiteit van Pretoria (2007-2015) en is tans ’n professor in die Departement Afrikaans en Nederlands, Duits en Frans aan die Universiteit van die Vrystaat.

Senekal, Ihette

Ihette is ʼn dosent in Afrikaanse letterkunde aan Unisa. Sy spesialiseer in Afrikaanse poësie en promoveer in 2018 met ʼn proefskrif oor die outobiografiese poësie van Afrikaanse vrouedigters. Sy publiseer gereeld as literêre resensent en academicus (onlangse publikasies sluit in: "'n Verkenning van relasionele outonomie aan die hand van die outobiografiese poësie van Afrikaanse vrouedigters." Litnet Akademies:'n Joernaal vir die Geesteswetenskappe, Natuurwetenskappe, Regte en Godsdienswetenskappe 17.3 (2020): 269-309. Sy is tans woonagtig in Pretoria saam met haar man en twee dogtertjies.

Snyman, Maritha

Maritha started her career as a teacher of Afrikaans literature, French and English. From 1974 she worked as a lecturer at the Department of Afrikaans, University of Pretoria. In 1999 she was appointed as associate professor in the Department of Information Science where she taught Information for development and Development Communication. In 2008 she became the managing director of LAPA Publishers, and returned to academic life as lecturer in the Department of Information Science at Unisa. She is known for her research on Afrikaans children’s and youth literature, especially as one of two editors of the first comprehensive history of Afrikaans children’s and youth literature Van Patrys-hulle tot Hanna Hoekom. She did extensive research in the fields of Reception Studies and Development Communication. She is also the author of 13 children’s books where her use of the reader centred approach is evident. Other publications include reviews in newspapers, articles in magazines and newspapers and more than 30 publications in accredited journals.

Stander, Danie

Danie is presently a postdoctoral fellow, seminar lecturer and tutor at Stellenbosch University’s English Department as well as the Department of Afrikaans and Dutch. He completed his bachelor’s degree in Drama in 2011and his Doctor’s in Philosophy (English Studies) in 2019. In 2014 he obtained a postgraduate diploma in education after which he taught high school English and Drama from 2015 to 2016. His research interests, bracketed mostly under the interdisciplinary rubric of life writing, include: translation studies, life writing, theatre and performance studies, historiography, canonicity, translation, the history of the sonnet and South African literature and history.

Stuit, Hanneke
Hanneke is Assistant Professor at the Literary and Cultural Analysis department at the University of Amsterdam and affiliated with the Amsterdam School for Cultural Analysis (ASCA). She is the author of Ubuntu Strategies: Constructing Spaces of Belonging in Contemporary South African Culture (Palgrave MacMillan 2015). More recently she has pursued issues around the representation of prison spaces in popular culture. Currently, she is a postdoctoral researcher in the ERC project Rural Imaginations (2019-2020), where she focuses on how cultural imaginations of the South African rural determine what aspects of contemporary rural life do and do not become visible nationally and globally.

T'Sjoen, Yves
Yves is hoogleraar moderne Nederlandse literatuur en geassocieerd onderzoeker van de vakgroepen Talen en Culturen & Vertalen, Tolken en Communicatie van de Universiteit Gent. Hij is voorzitter van de onderzoeksgroep Gents Centrum voor het Afrikaans en de Studie van Zuid-Afrika (UGent) en betrokken bij de onderzoekseenheden Teksteditie Literatuur in Vlaanderen, POWEZIE. Centrum voor poëzie en TRACE (Translation & Culture). Daarnaast is hij als buitengewoon hoogleraar verbonden aan het departement Afrikaans en Nederlands van Universiteit Stellenbosch en deeltijds aangesteld aan de Karelsuniversiteit in Praag. In de faculteit Letteren en Wijsbegeerte (UGent) is hij promotor van de leerstoel Zuid-Afrika: talen, literaturen, cultuur en maatschappij. In 2021 is hij verkozen als lid van de Koninklijke Academie voor Nederlandse Taal en Letteren.

Van der Waal, Margriet

Margriet is bijzonder hoogleraar Zuid-Afrikaanse literatuur, cultuur en geschiedenis aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam (vanwege de Stichting Zuid-Afrikahuis Nederland), en universitair hoofddocent in cultural studies aan de Universiteit van Groningen waar zij verbonden is aan het Erasmus Mundus-programma Euroculture. Haar onderzoek handelt over de vraag naar "wie een stem" heeft of krijgt via de kunsten in de culturele publieke ruimte. Samen met Jeltsje Stobbe en Rosa Deen redigeerde ze een publicatie over lantaarnplaatjes uit het Zuid-Afrikahuis-archief (Magic Visions: Portraying and inventing South Africa with lantern slides, 2021).

Verdoolaege, Annelies

Annelies is policy advisor at the International Relations Office of Ghent University. In this function she coordinates the Africa Platform of Ghent University Association (www.africaplatform.ugent.be). She is also the editor-in-chief of the international academic journal Afrika Focus (https://brill.com/afoc). She holds MA degrees in Languages & Literatures (1997, Ghent University), African Languages and Cultures (2000, Ghent University), and Africana Studies (State University of New York at Albany, 2001). Her PhD research (2005, Ghent University) focused on the transition between apartheid and post-apartheid South Africa. A significant part of her academic career was devoted to research capacity-building projects in countries such as Tanzania, Ethiopia, Mozambique, DRCongo, Uganda and South Africa.

Viljoen, Kanya

Kanya graduated cum laude from the University of Cape Town with a specialisation in Theatre and Performance. Recently, Kanya completed her MA in Practice as Research as an Andrew W Mellon scholar and graduated with distinction. She is a founding member of Unusual Bones, an interdisciplinary creative company working in both film, theatre and performance art.

As part of her research and practice Kanya constantly seeks to re-member the notions around language, identity and performance within a multi-fragmented society.

Vitackova, Martina
Martina is gastprofessor Afrikaanse letterkunde bij het Gents centrum voor het Afrikaans en de studie van Zuid-Afrika. Ze is gepromoveerd in algemene literatuurwetenschap met haar proefschrift ‘Back to the Roots? Forming New Concepts of Women´s Identity in Contemporary Postcolonial Literature Written by Women in Dutch and Afrikaans‘. Ze is verder ook medeauteur van de Geschiedenis van de Nederlandse literatuur in het Tsjechisch (2015). Martina heeft 5 jaar als post-doc bij Universiteit van Pretoria gewerkt waar ze o.a. de Gender Studies research group – GR@UP – mede-gesticht heeft. In haar onderzoek richt ze zich naar de representatie van vrouwelijke subjectiviteit in hedendaagse Afrikaanse en Nederlandse letterkunde, vooral in de populaire romantische fictie. Bovendien vertaalt ze Afrikaanse literatuur in het Tsjechisch.

Westerveld, Judith

Judith grew up in South Africa and the Netherlands. She studied Fine Art at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, followed by the Master Artistic Research at the University of Amsterdam. In her films, audio-visual installations, photocollages and performance based work, she researches the relation between the archive, the voice and the narrative, probing who is heard and seen, remembered and historicized in a postcolonial world. Language in spoken, written and embodied form, as well as memory, oral history and archival material are recurring elements that shape her work. Westerveld lives and works in Amsterdam and Cape Town and is represented by gallery Lumen Travo in Amsterdam. Over the last years her work has been supported by the Established Artist Grant and Emerging Artist Grant from the Mondriaan Fund.

Williams, Quentin

Quentin is Director of the Centre for Multilingualism and Diversities Research (CMDR) and an Associate Professor of Sociolinguistics in the Linguistics Department at the University of the Western Cape (UWC). He is also the Ghent Visiting Professor (Leerstoel Houder) at the Centre for Afrikaans and the study of South Africa at Ghent University (Belgium) (2022/2023). He has published books, journal articles, book chapters and Op-Ed pieces on the performance and practice of multilingualism, race, Hip Hop, language activism, Afrikaaps, and linguistic citizenship in South Africa. He is co-editor of the journal Multilingual Margins: a journal of multilingualism from the periphery, and co-founder of the Heal the Hood Hip Hop Lecture Series, a forum for the African Hip Hop Indaba.
