Recreation and Visitor Use Planning

The demand for outdoor recreation has never been higher. Using proven approaches, we work with clients to identify desired conditions for both recreation experiences and natural and cultural resource protection and management. We will discuss a variety of effective management strategies and implementable actions to work toward desired conditions. We also provide VUM training and coaching.

Community Engagement and Visioning

Too often, only a few people have decided on the future of outdoor recreation for a community with little input from those affected. Historically excluded and underrepresented communities are rarely engaged even though they have been disproportionately impacted by these decisions. We bring traditional and new voices together to collectively imagine a more inclusive outdoor recreation future.

Facilitation and Process Design

Have you ever attended a meeting that makes you want to get up and leave? Whether it is a 2-hour virtual meeting or  2-day in person workshop, we use proven facilitation methods to effectively engage participants to achieve meeting objectives and outcomes.

Project Examples

Arkansas River Community Preserve Management Plan

Ruby Mountain Consulting partnered with Recreation Solutions Group to develop a management plan for the Arkansas River Community Preserve in Lake County, CO. The Preserve is owned by the Central Colorado Conservancy and public access is managed by Lake County Parks, Recreation and Open Space. The management plan provides guidelines to ensure conservation goals and passive outdoor recreation are compatible along a three mile stretch of the Arkansas River that was previously in private ownership.

Angeles National Forest Visitor Reception Interpretation, and Education Plan

Ruby Mountain Consulting worked with the San Gabriel Mountains Collaborative and Angeles National Forest to develop a Master Visitor Reception, Interpretation, and Education Plan. The USFS, nonprofit organizations, and other partners will use the plan to welcome people to the national forest and help them understand responsible recreation, stewardship and safety during their visits.

Devil’s Head Recreation Strategy

Ruby Mountain Consulting was contracted by the National Park Service Rivers and Trails Conservation Assistance program to facilitate a visitor capacity workshop and support the completion of the Devil’s Head Area Recreation Strategy. Rachel co-facilitated the visitor capacity workshop with the RTCA project lead and documented the meeting notes and outcomes. She worked with the Forest Service lead to finalize the recreation strategy to improve management, access, and visitor experiences at the Devil's Head Recreation Area.
