Secondary Phase 1:
Full In-Person Learning

Both RHS and RMS will retain their current bell schedules. We have received feedback about the duration of the block at RHS and the potential return to an 8-period day, however retaining the block halves the number of students who would need to quarantine in the event of a positive case in the class. The block also allows administrators to balance lunches. Teachers will provide breaks for both virtual and in-person students.

Students enrolled in the full-day, every day in-person program will be expected to attend school in-person every day unless they fail the daily Covid-19 screening survey.

Students who are enrolled in in-person instruction but attend in-person intermittently will lose the opportunity to attend in-person and will be required to enroll in the fully virtual program. Students who are enrolled in in-person instruction will also be prohibited from testing at home if they are absent on the day of a test or quiz. These in-person students would be required to sit for the test or quiz upon their return to the school building.

Parents who wish to take their children on trips must submit an educational trip request form as in previous years.

In a survey administered by the district to gather learning program commitments, approximately 77% of Radnor High School families and 84% of Radnor Middle School families confirmed the enrollment of their secondary student(s) in the full-day, every day in-person learning program.

Both RHS and RMS are prepared to safely accommodate these secondary students every day. Desks will be arranged between four and six feet apart, with the goal to space desks to the greatest extent possible. Classrooms were again measured after we received the results of the program commitment survey to ensure all students who elected to return were able to do so.

As RHS and RMS transition to Phase 1, the instructional model in the classroom will alter slightly. The revised model will center on the engagement of in-person students, while also providing ample opportunities for fully virtual students to fully participate in lectures, class discussions, small group work with peers, and individual conferences with teachers.

Teachers will instruct their classes similar to how teaching occurred pre-pandemic, with the teacher directly engaging with students in the classroom. Since teachers can teach wirelessly, they can engage students at home and in school. Students at home will be invited into the classroom via Zoom as if they were sitting at a desk. They will see and hear their classmates and teacher and view the same lesson/unit materials that the students in class are viewing: demonstrations, videos, PowerPoint slides, class notes, etc.

Each classroom will be outfitted with a USB microphone to capture the teacher’s lecture and the questions, answers, and comments of the students in the room.

In the beginning of February 2021, the district updated masking requirements to eliminate gaiters as an acceptable face covering. This change helped strengthen our mitigation strategies in anticipation of a move to Phase 1. The district also purchased KN95 masks for all employees to use and distributed them to each building. Face shields were distributed at the beginning of the year, and extras are available if needed. Employees and students are also encouraged to see their principal if they are in need of PPE.

RMS and RHS will continue to utilize three separate locations in each building for lunches to space students and are committed to ensuring students have six-feet of spacing during lunches.

Students at RMS utilize the Auxiliary Gym, Cafeteria, and the Large Group Instruction (LGI) room for lunch, while RHS students utilize the Back Gym, the Black Box Theater, and the Cafeteria.

Bus ridership at RMS and RHS to continue to meet seat limit guidelines outlined in our Health and Safety Plan (maximum of 46 riders/bus). RHS currently anticipates 319 riders, while RMS anticipates 441.

For the first two weeks of the shift to Phase 1, police will be used at RHS and RMS to assist with arrival and dismissal. RHS and RMS administration will monitor pick-up and drop-off to adjust traffic flow as necessary.
