In the beginning of the year, we primarily focus on learning our letters and sounds. We then progress into writing our letters with the correct formations.
*Under Parent Resources, you will find some common language and "helpful Tips" to use at home related to forming letters.
*You will also find a link to a song we use in Kindergarten called "Always Start Your Letters At The Top!"
In the beginning of the year we focus on how to use our tools correctly/ appropriately and explore what it takes to become an illustrator. This includes learning how to make "WOW" pictures which includes using a lot of colors, filling in the white space with details and labels. Once we have the foundational skills for writing, we then progress into writing introductory stories to explore what it takes to become an author.
"Narrative Writing" is another topic we cover in the 1st trimester after learning how to form our letters. Narrative will also transition into the 2nd trimester of school as well. In Narrative writing we learn that this type of story is something that happened to us and it's "true". We learn about "Characters", "Setting", "Beginning", "Middle" and "End".
"Informational Writing" is a topic we cover in the 2nd trimester of school. This form of writing teaches students how to show what they know about a topic and they become the "teachers" to help others become "experts" too! We discuss what "Facts" are and how to use them in our writing.
"Opinion Writing" is covered in our 3rd trimester of school. In this unit we talk about how we all have different "ideas" and "feelings" about things and that it is OK! We learn how to come up with a topic we really like and talk with others about "why" we feel that way.
The students published piece is when they choose an animal to research and become an "expert" on. We then learning about how to type our stories and even include "Scientific Drawings" of our animal so our readers can see what they look like up close!
