What is an ELO?

What is an extended learning opportunity?

Extended Learning Opportunities are personal learning experiences that students complete in order to earn credits in high school. Components of an ELO include academic rigor, research, and reflection. The end result of an ELO culminates with a research product that is presented to faculty in order to complete their ELO credits.

Students are able to earn credits such as electives or complete core requirements through ELO's. When completing an ELO a student must establish a goal for their ELO and develop a learning plan. This includes the areas of research and reflection throughout the semester. The project will be completed with a culminating project that reflects the student's learning throughout the semester.

Many ELO's are student-driven, which means they decide their learning plan and assessments. Students develop a proposal for their final project that allows them to create an individualized project.

Types of Extended Learning Opportunities:

-Dual Enrollment: Earning college credit while in high school. Please the see Dual Enrollment page under the menu options.

-Concurrent Enrollment: Earning college credit while in high school. These courses are taught or co-taught by Massabesic faculty.

-Independent Study: Students can take an independent study with a Massabesic faculty member or through the ELO program. Please see the independent studies and ELO independent studies page for more information under the menu options.

-Service Learning Projects/Hours: Students earn credit or hours through volunteering. Students can develop an individualized project that allows them to give back to their community.

-Internships: Students are placed at a local business for an internship during part of their day. Students will need to complete an application to be in this program.

This placement can range from a few hours to a full day. Students will need to complete an independent study form in order to be enrolled in the course.
