School-to-Work Program

The School-to-Work Program allows students to earn credits while working during the school year. This program is one of the programs within the Extended Learning Opportunities Program. The goals of this program are to prepare students academically, socially, and economically. The School-to-Work program is considered an employment situation and students are placed in local businesses. The employer must pay students at least the minimum wage and comply with all applicable State and Federal laws. This program aligns with the Maine Department of Labor and Maine Department of Education guidelines. Under Maine law, the hours worked in these types of programs are not counted against the hourly restrictions set for youth under the age of 18. (Federal laws are more restrictive for minors under the age of 16, regardless of school programs.)

Students are able to earn 1.0 credits per semester through this program. These credits are elective credits. The credits are broken down into two courses. The first course evaluates the students’ at their worksite. Students will be evaluated by the Extended Learning Opportunities Coordinator as well as their site supervisor on pre-assigned job duties and training tasks. For more information please see the “Worksite Evaluation” page in this handbook. The second course is based on the career education curriculum and units outlined in the in School-to-Work Syllabus. For more information please see the “School-to-Work Curriculum” and “School-to-Work Syllabus” page in this handbook

The Extended Learning Opportunities Coordinator will be in charge of grading and evaluation of students in the School-to-Work Program. Students, parents/guardians, and site supervisors must maintain constant communication with the Extended Learning Opportunities Coordinator.
