Dear Parents and Guardians,
We hope this letter finds you well! As we embark on an exciting school year, we want to take a moment to share important information about upcoming school events, grade reporting, and expectations for our 6th-grade students. We know that entering middle school is exciting and nerve-wracking at the same time for the students and families:) Please feel free to reach out to the school at any time. You can email a teacher directly or please feel free to reach out to our school counselor or administration. We value our relationship with you and realize it feels different when you move from one or two teachers in elementary school to a whole team of educators at Freeport Middle.
We are excited to work together to support your child’s growth and success in the 6th grade. If you have any questions about upcoming events, PowerSchool, or our expectations, please do not hesitate to reach out.
Thank you for your continued support!
Sincerely,
6th Grade Teachers
As 6th graders, students are stepping into a more independent role in their education. To support their growth, we have the following expectations and supports:
Responsibility: Students are expected to complete homework and assignments on time. Learning to manage deadlines is crucial for their success. All students have a planner/agenda where they record assignments, projects, and upcoming assessments. We urge you to sit down with your 6th grader to review the planner nightly. When laptops come home, have your student show you Google Classroom and PowerSchool. Please encourage your 6th grader to email teachers directly if they have questions or concerns about their assignments or grades.
Respect: Respect for teachers, peers, technology, and school rules is a cornerstone of a positive learning environment. We ask students to always show kindness and consideration.
Preparedness: Students should come to school each day with the necessary materials (books, pencils, notebooks, folders, etc.) and be ready to engage in learning.
Effort: We encourage students to give their best effort, even when faced with challenging tasks. Asking questions and seeking help is part of the learning process. Students have the opportunity during BCS (study hall) to get assistance from teachers and are encouraged to do so.
Attendance: Regular attendance is essential for academic success. Please ensure your child is present unless they are ill or have a legitimate reason for missing school.
The Online Weekly Announcement
This weekly online email announcement has a wealth of information on upcoming events, meetings, and activities. Our student clubs offerings are announced here and we encourage students to try one of these activities. Clubs are drop- in activities and students are not expected to attend a club every week. Students may take the 3:00 late bus home if participating in the clubs.
We offer a late bus for students who want to stay after with a teacher for help or for a club or activity. The late bus leaves FMS at 3:05pm
What to do after an absence
This is an area where we will ask our 6th graders to be responsible for their missed work and may be different than elementary school. If your child is absent they should check their Google Classroom pages and email/check-in with their teachers. Checking in with teachers during BCS is a great plan to be sure they have the missing assignments and to ask for help they may need.
6th-grade Development: This adolescent time will bring about many changes. It helpful to know what these developmental milestones are:)
