For 30 years, the Senator George J. Mitchell Scholarship Research Institute has been dedicated to expanding access to higher education for Maine students. This year, the Mitchell Institute is proud to award scholarships to 200 graduating high school seniors—one from every community in the state. CONGRATULATIONS to this year's National Technical Honor Society inductees!
On Wednesday, May 7th, ten students got to take a behind-the-scenes tour of the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard!
After a thorough safety briefing, students visited the Materials Test Lab, where students observed live testing on submarine components to determine how much pressure key materials can withstand. They took on the role of chemists, analyzing oil samples, making hypotheses, and conducting a brief but hands-on experiment exploring acids, bases, and titrations.
Next, students headed to the Riggers area, where we saw an impressive mock-sub setup designed to simulate the realities of moving and maneuvering massive loads within the tight confines of a sub. Here, students relied on critical thinking and applied physics, leveraging calculations, load ratios, angles, pulleys, and levers, to problem-solve like real engineers.
Students' third stop was the Machine Shop, where their guide brought the entire experience full circle. He highlighted how his high school foundation—including STEM skills, communication (both written and verbal), problem-solving, and collaborative work, was essential to his professional success. More importantly, he emphasized that these skills ensure not only workplace productivity but also the safety of colleagues on-site and submariners deep beneath the ocean’s surface.
Students wrapped up the day at the Shipyard Heritage Center, reflecting on what they had seen and exploring preserved artifacts that trace the rich history of the shipyard across centuries!
On May 21st, over 70 representatives from four-year colleges, two-year colleges, gap year programs, trade schools, and employers participated in our College & Career Fair. For the first time, students could fill out job applications and interview "on-the-spot" for many local employers hiring this summer!
If you are still looking for a summer job, NOW is the time to create or update your resume! Check out the presentation below for helpful tips & tricks, and our job board to see which local businesses are hiring this summer:
Remember that your Q4 grades impact your SAC pass eligibility and your ability to participate in sports and extracurricular activities, so finish the year strong!
