Sentence frames offer students opportunities to talk and write about content by providing them with language structures/patterns. By giving students the structure for language use, this frees them to focus on expressing their understanding of the content. Sentence frames do not provide the answers, but rather a means for students to express their thinking and knowledge.
Sentence frames look different for different levels of language proficiency. See the example from Colorín Colorado below.
Graphic organizers are visual representations of thinking and an excellent way for students to process knowledge. (Need a refresher on what graphic organizers are, why we should use them, and how they benefit all students, including MLs? Check out this article.)
Tips for effectively using graphic organizers:
Teach students how to use graphic organizers by modeling expectations and providing guided practice with feedback.
Consider partially filling in the graphic organizer and having students complete the missing information. "This has been shown to help students recall information more effectively and teach them how to take graphic organizer notes on their own" (Robinson et al., 2006). (Cult of Pedagogy)
