What do we do in Library/Technology Class in grades K and 1?

We learn about books.

• We learn how to take care of books, the parts of books, types of books, and where different kinds of books are located in our library.

• We read books, talk about authors, distinguish between fiction and non-fiction, and compare folktales from different parts of the world.

• We study multiple books by an author, find some favorite authors, and begin to read series of books.

• We learn about awards that are given to books, use books to find answers to questions we have, and recommend books to each other.

We learn about digital tools.

• We learn how to use an image based database like PebbleGo to find answers to our questions.

• We learn how to find, read, and listen to online books in Epic!

• We learn how to create and share our own digital books using Book Creator.

• We learn to make videos using Adobe Spark.

• We begin to use the fundamentals of computer programming to direct real robots called Beebots. We use words like "input", "output", "commands", "execute", "sequence", "bug" and "debug". At the same time we practice directional commands and reinforce left and right.

• We practice using our classroom digital tools like Class Dojo and Seesaw.

We learn to navigate our iPads and stay safe online.

• We learn to turn on and shut down our iPads

• We learn to open and close apps.

• We learn to switch screens and share our iPad to the Apple TV.

• We learn to use the dictation feature and Siri to write and find what we need.

• We learn to "stay in our own neighborhood" online, only going where an adult has taken us.

• We learn to keep our information private, never to talk to people we don't know, and always to ask an adult when we see something unusual or scary.

• We learn to behave kindly, to help with words instead of hands, to ask for help from friends.
