ACE MATH and ELA

ACE MATH at OMS:

In 6th-8th Grade ACE MATH groups, we use MOEMs (Math Olympiads for Elementary and Middle Schools) to develop logical reasoning and creative problem-solving skills. We also use other core curriculum elements:

Math Olympiads (MOEMs): Students compete in the Math Olympiad and take 5 tests over the course of a year, learning to tackle non-routine problems that require creative thinking and multiple strategies.

Acceleration: Students may be accelerated a year if applicable to their ALP pathway.

Other resources: ALEKS, Math Counts, Kahn Academy, iReady.

The ACE MATH services are offered as a collaboration with the Math classroom teacher to enrich and extend lessons that are being taught in the classroom.

ACE ELA at OMS:

In 6th-8th Grade ACE ELA groups, the core curriculum elements include:

ELA extension groups explore the abstract themes, sophisticated vocabulary, and author’s craft that challenge high-potential readers. Strategies used:

Advanced Literary Analysis: Moving past basic comprehension into philosophical, structural, and historical examination of texts.

Complex Composition: Intensive focus on persuasive rhetoric, academic research, and creative non-fiction.

Independent Mentorship: Self-directed projects and writing growth tracking via intensive editorial feedback. 

Other resources: Junior Great Books, and Shakespeare Reader's Theatre are used to engage in inquiry about text, using evidence based discussion, higher level thinking questions and by tackling the big essential questions that connect our readers to the real world. 

Novel studies offer students the opportunity to engage in complex narratives that require close reading. We will compare and contrast novels of the same genre/author. This may include a contrast/comparison to a novel the student is reading in their regular ELA classroom.

The ACE ELA services are offered as a collaboration with the ELA classroom teacher to enrich and extend lessons that are being taught in the classroom.
