Lithium is used to make lithium ion batteries which are used to power the phone.
There is only one Spodumene mine in Canada, the Whabouchi Mine, in central Quebec. They use open pit mining. spodumene is a mineral which lithium is extracted from. In 2019, the biggest producer of lithium was Australia, with 52.9% of global production.
Lithium is also used as a mood stabilizer for people with bipolar disorder. One medication is Eskalith. Lithium is a non renewable resource on any human timescale.
There are around 17-21 million tonnes left of lithium in the world. Australia has the most amount of spodumene in the world, with 5 spodumene mines.
First, it is heated up to around 2012º f, then cooled down to 149º f. Once it has been cooled to the appropriate temperature, it is crushed, then roasted again, this time with sulfuric acid. Then sodium carbonate is added, making it in to lithium carbonate.
