Teachers in Regional School District 17 have been trying out teaching practices from the research of Peter Liljedahl and his book Building Thinking Classrooms.
Some features you may see in your child's classroom include:
tasks (Short, engaging tasks related to topics in the current unit topics or focused on open-ended problem solving)
vertical non-permanent surfaces (Multiple whiteboard posters around the room for collaborative problem solving in a risk-free environment)
visibly random groups (Students working in groups of 2 or 3)
note-making (Students choosing what they want to remind their "future forgetful self" about in a math journal or notebook)
check your understanding (Short problem sets to self-check your progress)
RSD17 follows the Connecticut Core standards. The standards are prioritized as major work of the grade, supporting standards and additional standards. Click on the grade level or course to see the list of Major Work. These are the most important concepts and procedures that your children will learn in that grade level.
Each year, teams develop pacing calendars for the year in mathematics. The documents below show the approximate month and sequence in which units of study are taught. Click on the grade level or course to see the pacing calendar.
The Mission of Regional School District 17 is to engage our students in an educational community that challenges students with high standards and builds their capacity to succeed and their aspiration to improve themselves and their society.
